The autumn harvest includes truffles, porcini mushrooms, chestnuts, olives, and grapes. Join Vitalia Tours this October as you make your way through the Tuscan countryside and sample and savor the flavors of fall!

The fall season in Italy is also about celebration, marking the end of the agricultural season. In almost every town throughout Italy you can find a sagra (Sagre plural), a festival celebrating the harvest of that town’s local food and specialty. These food festivals are a wonderful chance to experience and to try the local culture, traditions and foods. You will attend a Medieval Autumn Festival as well as a Chestnut Festival to immerse you in the local traditions and customs of the region of Tuscany
One of this tour’s highlights is the half day that you will spend with a local truffle hunter and his dogs. Afterward, you will head back to the kitchen for a cooking lesson where you learn how to incorporate this prized tuber into several delicious dishes.
This tour entails a full immersion into the Tuscan lifestyle, methods of farming and wine making, as well as the production of olive oil, cured meats, cheese, honey and other types of food products typical to these areas of Tuscany. In this itinerary, Vitalia Tours has included the very best of Tuscany, through places where you can truly get the real feel of the region, staying in lovely places, and exploring with expert local guides.
This will be a journey of exploration, of the warm locals, art and tradition, food and wine, and the genuine atmosphere.
Welcome to Italy! You will be met at the Rome airport by your private driver who will whisk you off to the Tuscan countryside. You will stop along the way for lunch - if there is time, the stop will be in Orvieto.
Your accommodation for the next 10 nights is in an agriturismo villa (authentic Tuscan farmhouse) situated in the center of Tuscany, very near the town of Cortona, made famous by Frances Mayes in her book, “Under the Tuscan Sun” and movie by the same name.
Enjoy a welcome cocktail upon arrival at your accommodation and meet the villa owner for an orientation meeting and check in. Settle in to unpack, relax, or stroll around the property. The rest of the afternoon / evening is yours to explore or relax. You will conclude the day with a group welcome dinner including local wines, served in the comfort of our villa.
Go for a morning departure for Cortona after breakfast at the villa. Cortona, which has its roots in Etruscan history, is a quiet and romantic town nestled in the beautiful hills of the Val di Chiana in the province of Arezzo.
It was made famous by Frances Mayes’ book and movie “Under the Tuscan Sun”. Afterward, you will visit a beautiful and completely organic winery for a guided tour of their vineyards and cellar.
Your tour will be followed by a fabulous lunch situated in beautiful surroundings with views of the vineyards, valley, and hills. You will enjoy your dinner tonight at the villa.
Today after your breakfast, you will depart for a tour of two of Tuscany’s most famous towns: Montepulciano and Pienza, set in the Val d’Orcia - what many view as the “quintessential” Tuscany. Along the way, you will be able to enjoy the breathtaking scenery that will be surrounding you - rolling hills dotted with cyprus, miles of vineyards, and olive groves. Your first stop is Pienza, famous for its Pecorino cheese, where you will have a tasting.
After lunch, it is time to move to the steeply sloped town of Montepulciano where you can wander the streets, stop at shops, churches, and town squares. You can also visit an enoteca and have a wine tasting. Head back to the villa and relax before dinner.
After breakfast at the agriturismo, head off for a full day in the renaissance capitol, Florence. Your first stop will be the colorful markets where you can find anything: from a tripe sandwich to a silk scarf! You will then meet up with your English-speaking local guide and enjoy a walking tour of Florence.
During the tour, your guide will point out famous sites such as the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, the Uffizi Gallery, Piazza della Signori, Piazza della Repubblica, and more. You will learn all about the dark secrets of Florence's famous noble families and artists with this behind the scenes and highlights tour. Enjoy time on your own for lunch.
The afternoon is free for you to shop, explore art galleries or museums, or just soak in the vibrant life of one of the many piazze while having a caffè or spritz. You will enjoy your dinner tonight at the villa.
After breakfast, you will depart to the Chianti region - an area of Tuscany made famous by the red wine of the same name. This is a beautiful region of terracotta-roofed towns and winding roads, leading through groves of olive trees, with cypress and endless vineyards stitching sun-dappled rolling hillsides - this is wine country.
You will visit some quaint villages, have lunch on a local farm, and experience some wine tastings. What else would you do in Chianti? Enjoy your dinner tonight at the villa, served with local wines.
This morning after breakfast, you will head out to the Arezzo countryside. You will stop at a stunning villa, learn its history, and have a delicious wine tasting. You will next stop in the town of Arezzo (made famous by the movie "Life is Beautiful" by Roberto Benigni) to explore.
Even though, the medieval center was destroyed during World War II, Arezzo still has a beautiful piazza and many historical buildings and churches as well as a Roman amphitheater and the remains of a fortress. Here, you will be able to grab lunch on your own at one of the many restaurants or cafes. You will conclude the day with dinner including local wines, served in the comfort of your villa.
Today, you are going to an area of Tuscany that is off-the-beaten path. You will head to an ancient olive oil mill and enjoy a tour, tasting, and lunch. Next, you will have a cooking demonstration and lesson, followed by a delicious lunch with all the dishes you have prepared. Afterward, you will visit one of the many small medieval villages in the area and learn of its interesting history.
Enjoy your breakfast at the agriturismo. Today, you will start out at a local market in a nearby ancient walled town where all the locals come to buy their fruits, vegetables, and daily wares. You will enjoy some free time to explore the market and town.
Then you are off to a local villa to learn all about its history and wine-making. A tasting will follow, along with their olive oil and other products. Return to the agriturismo for dinner.
Today, you will visit a local ‘Sagra’ or feste that celebrates a specialty food of the area. You will enjoy a hearty typical Tuscan barbecue for lunch and soak up the festive fall atmosphere.
Early morning, enjoy your breakfast at the villa as you say your goodbyes. You will board the vans and depart for the Rome airport (FCO).
Bid arrivederci to Italy!
Tuscany - it is like a dazzling diamond in the rough. Its diverse landscapes are filled with vineyards, olive groves, quaint hilltop towns, and medieval castles. But, it is also the central point for the birth of the Renaissance. Few parts of the world can claim such an abundance of art, history, architecture, culture, food, and wine, or so intense a range of natural splendor.
Like all of Italy, Tuscany is filled with numerous ancient traditions. Each city or village plays host to various colorful religious rituals, historical pageants, medieval-style tournaments, unique traditional spectacles, food festivals, and much more. But in addition, routine tasks are tied to tradition - the daily ritual of making bread or coffee, farmers producing prosciutto, wine or olive oil, or artisans working or honing their craft. And like everything in Italy, these traditions seek to bring people together with good food and good wine at the table.
Such is the rich culture and heritage Tuscany. Its small towns and villages move to a slower rhythm of life, connected to tradition, daily ritual, and the seasons. Its character and essence is deeply tied to its past. In some places, time seems to have stopped.
During this holiday, you will still have some flexibility for free time to relax in a piazza, meander the small villages you will be visiting, or do some shopping.
