Imagine yourself in a sunny vineyard, sheers in hand, pruning grapes from ancient vines! You really do have to experience this pleasure to appreciate the scene at one of the region’s most respected family-owned vineyards. For the producers, this is a labour of love, and this is a unique opportunity for you to share it.
You will enjoy tours of the wineries, hosted by the owners. There will be the chance to sample the aromas and tastes of the finest wines, with farm fresh finger-food, selected and prepared to complement what you are drinking.
Later, the whole region is carpeted with sheets of deep purple grapes drying naturally in the sun to make the famous Zakynthian currants, locally known as “Black Gold”.

On arrival at Zakynthos, you will be collected from the airport and taken to your accommodation. You will have time to settle in. Later, you are welcome to join us on a trip to the nearby supermarket to shop for your holiday necessities. In the evening we will hold a welcome meeting and buffet in our cosy reception and garden. You will meet your hosts the Vythoulkas family and your fellow guests. Your hosts will be delighted to tell you about the traditions there are during “Trygos”, familiarise you with the week’s proposed itinerary and answer any questions you may have.
After a delicious leisurely breakfast, we set off for a hands on harvest experience at Grampsas vineyard, hosted by the family owners.Imagine yourself in a vineyard during the grape harvest, surrounded and enveloped by the sweet fragrance of the ripe grapes stunning amber and purple hues as far as the eye can see. Sheers in hand on an autumn morning, the Zakynthian sunshine will warm you as you harvest this wonderful fruit straight from the ancient vines, together with the host family! Soon after, there will be the opportunity to tour the family’s boutique winery and sample the aromas and tastes of the fine wines, with farm fresh finger food, selected and prepared to complement the wines. The conversation will definitely be centred around what a truly wonderful experience this has been! In the afternoon, we return to Villa Spiros, so that you can relax, perhaps go swimming and enjoy the rest of your day.
After a hearty breakfast, we set off for Marathonisi Island, remarkably shaped like our native sea turtle Caretta caretta. We go by boat from the small harbour at Agios Sostis, on the short trip across the bay, hoping to see and even swim alongside some of the large, graceful loggerhead turtles.The beach on uninhabited Marathonisi Island has fine, white powder like sand & is a good swimming spot. Later, back at Villa Spiros, we are ready for today’s “Farm to Fork”cooking activity based on a variety of fresh vegetables and livestock from the family’s household. Rabbit in tomato sauce, freshly fried potatoes, tzatziki and Greek salad. If you are vegetarian we also have tastebud tantalizing recipes with organic vegetables from our garden. Home-made wine and bread will accompany our traditional lunch. Another perfect day!
-Day 4, Winemaking & Vineyard Picnic
This morning we gather once again to harvest the grapes, at the family vineyard of your hosts in Mouzaki village. After gathering the grapes into the special crates, we will follow them to the press and watch the fascinating process of turning fruit into wine. Next, we will lay our picnic blankets down in the vineyard and enjoy a country picnic, among the intoxicating aromas of the vines. Simple, yet wonderful!. Spend the afternoon and evening at leisure in Laganas resort with its unending sandy beach and wonderful, shallow crystal clear water. You can enjoy walking, swimming, snorkelling and if you are lucky, you may find yourself swimming alongside turtles.
Scuba diving, water sports, boat hire and sun beds are plentiful making it easy to relax under the Greek sun.
There is a varied array of beach bars, restaurants, cafe bars and traditional tavernas to while away your evening hours.
Around midday, we set off for the north of the island, with several gastronomic stops along the way. One will be at the olive oil factory where you can sample Zakynthian “Liquid Gold” the precious oil, which gives the Zakynthian people their lust for life.
Arriving at the picturesque port of Porto Vromi, we will take boat ride to the famous Shipwreck Bay for swimming. Backed by towering white cliffs, this is a favourite for base jumpers. The turquoise blue, crystal clear waters are a natural delight.
Later, we move on to our lunch destination; a family owned and run mountain taverna. After a warm welcome and a cool welcome drink, Grandmother Athina will show us, step by step, how to cook a family recipe handed down the generations: stuffed free range chicken in tomato sauce with pasta, plus a variety of starters. She will invite us to help her up to the stage of putting the pot onto the flames of a wood-fired oven. Alternatively, for our vegetarian guests, grandma Athina, will show another family recipe based on free ranged eggs and vegetables cooked in tomato sauce. While our meal is cooking, we will have time for a leisurely stroll with Athina’s son, who farms their land and will have grown today’s food. He will take us through the Alpine-type fields to see plants, trees, flowers and vines and to say hello to the livestock. Then back to the taverna where in the shade of a huge oak tree we’ll enjoy the food we cooked, plus local wine, and homemade dessert to add that final sweet flourish.
Around midday, we set off to heavenly Dafni Beach, another important nesting ground of the sea turtle.
Before reaching the beach we will visit the Turtle museum, so you will understand and appreciate more the turtles’ needs and life cycle. Just a little further on we arrive at the beach. Why not take a stroll and chat to one of the passionate volunteers from the preservation trust who are always happy to share their expertise on the subject of the turtles?
Out to sea the secluded uninhabited island of Pelouzo and the protected beach of Sekania, provide a stunning backdrop to a spectacular setting. Time now to unwind, maybe swim or snorkel and do some turtle spotting.
Cooking and Dining
Unlike regular holiday makers there is no need to leave this wonderful location, no need to rush off and dress for dinner, it’s all right here.The owner of the family beach front taverna, “Dafni beach”, will welcome you to prepare and cook with her the most tantalizing dishes on the restaurant’s traditional menu. Andri will welcome your culinary questions as she is proud to share her knowledge of traditional Zakynthian cuisine, so please, take advantage of the wealth of experience that comes with many years of putting love and pride into every delicious spoonful.
And finally, it’s time to take your seat under an inky starlit sky, your table at the water’s edge, the gentle water lapping at your feet; the perfect location to enjoy your exclusive dinner. A once in a lifetime experience!
Solomos Winery visit & Romantic Bohali evening
Enjoy your breakfast, then meet at Villa Spiros where we will be making little gifts to take home. We will make together “Gliko Koutaliou”, the seasonal local spoon dessert with grapes. We will also make “Halva”, a traditional semolina based dessert with raisins, delicious!!! Also, we can favor some olive oil with seasonal herbs that you can take home with you. A lasting reminder of your wonderful “Trygos” experience in Zakynthos. In the evening we visit Solomos Winery for another wine tasting. The host family will invite you to enjoy a variety of wines, engage in conversation about the product and the dedication it takes for us to be able to indulge in our favourite tipples back home. Then, stroll in the coolness of the underground stone cellars, kept at a constant natural temperature to best preserve the wines. After, the wine tasting we will visit the romantic region of Bohali, situated at the highest point above beautiful Zakynthos town. Here you will enjoy a traditional farewell dinner with magnificent views over the twinkling lights of the town and harbour below. The locally produced wines and traditional Greek ouzo will help you relax while traditional singers (kantades) set the mood.
This morning why not enjoy a final walk to Laganas main street or the beach? In good time, your driver will take you to the airport for your departure.By now you will truly be feeling like a Zakynthian through and through and definitely like a member of our family. This holiday will take place in the breathtaking Ionian island of Zakynthos, where you will find wonderful picturesque villages, green slopes all around, and the endless, blue, crystal clear, Ionian Sea. Traditional houses, old cafés, and family tavernas, compliment this beautiful setting. The agricultural activity is also very visible with hectares of cultivated land, vineyards, olive groves, and tiny family owned factories. Although most small businesses are closed in the winter months, kiosks, supermarkets, tavernas, and medical centers are still open daily and just a short drive or bus ride takes you to the main Zakynthos town where everything is open and available to you.
During this vacation, you will delight your palate with delicious meals, which will include lunches at local tavernas and one farm-to-fork experience, based on a variety of fresh vegetables and live stock from the family’s household, and where you will be able to try rabbit in tomato sauce, freshly fried potatoes, tzatziki, and Greek salad.

Arrive at Athens International Airport (ATH). Then catch a domestic flight to Zakynthos (ZTH) airport. Your hosts will pick you up from the airport. The pick-up is included in the price.
Alternatively, you may take the coach from Athens Kiffisos central bus station to Zakynthos, feuturing a one hour boat ride ftom Kyllini port to Zakynthos. We can help you arrange your bus & boat tickets.
Arrival by Ferry boat from Venice, Ancona, or Brindisi to Patras is an alternative if you travel either by car or train. It takes about 20 hours with the superfast ferries from Venice to Patras. Then, there is a further hour drive by car or bus from Patras to Killini port, from where the ferry boat takes you to Zakynthos Town in one hour. Zakynthos can be easily reached by boat from Killini port or nearby Kefalonia Island.
