Day 1, Arrival and welcome buffet

You will be collected from the airport and brought to your accommodation. We will give you time to settle into your new surroundings. Later, you are welcome to join us on trip to the nearby supermarket, to shop for your holiday necessities.

In the evening there will be a welcome meeting and buffet in our reception area and garden. You will meet your hosts, the Vythoulkas family, and your fellow guests. Your hosts will be delighted to tell you about the traditions surrounding Black Gold, familiarise you with the week’s proposed plans and answer any questions you may have.

Day 2, The Black Gold journey starts

Join us as we journey through the fascinating process of current production from vine to packaged product.

After a leisurely breakfast, we will take you to see the vines with their little round grapes shining like rubies in the sunlight. Enjoy the peace of this stunning landscape as you hand prune grapes from the vines and gently place them in crates for transport to the drying mats. After an enjoyable morning’s work, we’ll take a break from the sunshine to enjoy a freshly prepared country picnic in the shade of the trees. You will be driven back to Villa Spiros to enjoy the rest of the day and evening as you choose.

Day 3, Turtle boat trip and farm to fork cooking activity

After a traditional breakfast, we set off for Marathonisi Island, shaped remarkably like our native sea turtle Caretta caretta. At the harbour of Agios Sostis, we board a boat to sail into the sweeping bay, hoping to see and even swim alongside some of the large, graceful loggerhead turtles. Next, we head out to sea for the short crossing to uninhabited Marathonisi Island, with its powder-like sands lapped by crystal clear waters. Later, back at Villa Spiros, we are ready for today’s farm to fork cooking activity. Thinly sliced rabbit is marinated, using local olive oil and herbs, to ensure beautifully tender meat. We will cook it on the BBQ to enjoy with fresh currant sauce on homemade sesame seed buns ……and with wine from our own vines.

Day 4, Sundried deliciousness and picnic in the sands

This morning we turn our attention to the sorting and drying of the grapes. The long drying mats are spread into the distance, now the sorting and drying process begins. First, the grapes are hand-sorted, removing any that are bad or damaged. Then, they are laid on the mats in the hot August sun to dry. For many days the grapes are tended, raked and turned to dry them thoroughly. During this process plump ruby-red grapes become dried black currants, a favourite for Christmas puddings, cakes and buns the world over. Later, we will drive you back to Laganas, to relax, enjoy the sea and a beach picnic of freshly made sandwiches. Spend the evening at leisure in Laganas resort. Along the sweeping bay, you will find plenty of beach bars, restaurants, cafes and traditional tavernas. You may want to skip the sweet course; when you come home you will find we’ve left you a current dessert in your fridge.

Day 5, Shipwreck Bay & Blue Caves, swimming and culinary experience

Enjoy a relaxed summer morning in lovely Laganas resort.

Around midday, we set off for the north of the island, with several gastronomic stops along the way. One will be at the olive oil factory where you can sample “Liquid Gold” the precious oil which gives Zakynthians their unique lust for life. At picturesque Porto Vromi, we will take a boat ride to world famous Shipwreck Bay. Backed by towering white cliffs, a favourite for base jumpers, it has the most turquoise crystal-clear waters anywhere on the island. Later, we move on to our lunch destination, a family owned and run mountain taverna in Orthotics village. The grandmother of the family, Athina, will show us step by step, how to cook a family recipe handed down the generations: free-range stuffed chicken in tomato sauce with pasta. We will also make a variety of starters, using vegetables straight from the kitchen garden. While lunch is cooking in the traditional wood-fired oven, our hosts will take us on a short walk to see their vegetable and herb gardens and meet the livestock. Then back at the taverna, in the shade of a lovely old oak tree, we will enjoy the lunch we helped cook, with some local wine. Homemade dessert will add that final sweet flourish.

Day 6, Free Day

Take a stroll to nearby Laganas beach, swim (maybe alongside turtles!), snorkel. Scuba diving, water sports and boat hire are available. Sunbeds are plentiful if you just want to relax. Alternatively, treat yourself to today’s exclusive optional excursion or let us know if we can help you arrange something specifically for you.

Day 7, Homemade gifts and Bohali evening

Enjoy your breakfast, then meet (at Villa Spiros) to make Gliko Koutaliou, a local dessert with currants. We will also package freshly dried currants. These are our gifts to you, a souvenir of your Black Gold experience in Zakynthos. In the evening we visit Zakynthos town. You will have two hours to wander the tiny streets and the main shopping street of Alexandrou Roma to browse and shop. Then, we will collect you and transport you to the romantic region of Bohali, above Zakynthos town. Here you will enjoy a traditional farewell dinner with magnificent views over the twinkling lights of the town and harbour below. Relax while the traditional local singers (kantades) set the mood.
