Exciting Wine and Food Tour in Tuscany

Join Tuscan Wine Tours in this exciting journey along Tuscany where you will be able to discover local traditions, wines and food. The trip goes on the discovery of the Etruscans and especially the Tuscan coastal wines for a whole week. Starting from the south to the north of the beautiful coast, discover the amazing wines of the Maremma region of Tuscany (the wild west) and eating amazing local specialties wherever you go.

Accommodation consists various bed and breakfast type of hotels, agritourismo or hotel of good standards.

Day 1, Saturday - Pitigliano

  • 09:00 Depart from Florence. You start your journey in the south of Tuscany where your first stop will be the amazingly beautiful village of Pitigliano, built on tufo stone. This area was inhabited by the Etruscans already 3000 years ago. Here you will find an age old grape varietal called Ciliegiolo that you shall discover.
  • In the afternoon, you will visit a local winery, Sassotondo, the best of the area.
  • You will check in to your hotel in Pitigliano.
  • Dinner at a local restaurant in Pitigliano with more wine tasting.
  • After dinner, you can enjoy free time to stroll around idyllic village before hitting the sacks.

Day 2, Sunday - Giglio

  • Early morning, depart to the island of Giglio where wine making is really extreme because so rocky and dry. The grape that you will encounter here is mainly Ansonica, but also many other varietals grow.
  • Enjoy an incredible fish lunch with the Ansonica wine.
  • After lunch, you will check into your accommodation and if you don't need to nap you will have time for a stroll around the port of this island whose inhabitants are merely 2000.
  • Visit Altura estate, where the owner will offer you a tour of the winery.
  • Dinner bathed in a great deal of fantastic wine.

Day 3, Monday - Massa Marittima

  • Early morning, depart to Maremma.
  • Enjoy a slow lunch.
  • After lunch, visit Rocca di Montemassi, a super modern winery. Here you will encounter the first modern take on the Coastal wines influenced by the great wines of Bordeaux.
  • In the evening, you will enjoy a cooking class at your bed and breakfast.
  • Dinner on your creations while enjoying the peaceful countryside.

Day 4, Tuesday - Elba

  • Depart to the island of Elba for the day. Elba is where Napoleon was exiled and was another Etruscan establishment. Here, you will encounter the native grape Aleatico which gives origin to a marvelous dessert wine and more.
  • Visit La Piana winery for a cellar tour and tasting in front of the seaside.
  • After lunch, visit the Aquaviva winery for another tasting.
  • Depart for Porto Ferrraio, the main village, for a quick stroll.
  • Dinner in the Fortress.
  • Spend the night at a local bed and breakfast in Portoferraio.

Day 5, Wednesday - Suvereto

  • Take the local ferry and get back on the mainland.
  • Visit Populonia, an Etruscan village and archeologic sight, very impressive and right on the coast. Enjoy a guided visit with a local guide.
  • Grab a panino and head up to the region of Suvereto that has recently marked itself as a DOCG region.
  • Visit a notorious winery such as Tua Rita and learn about the region from the best.
  • Have dinner at Guado al Re - another well-regarded winery.

Day 6, Thursday - Capraia

  • Early morning, head to a small island called Capraia.
  • Have some time to relax on the trip there and back (2 hours each way, but worth it!).
  • Visit the winery La Piana that makes excellent wines on this island.
  • Picnic with their wines and enjoy time to explore the island.
  • Dinner in Bolgheri, where you will spend the night.

Day 7, Friday - Bolgheri

  • Bolgheri is the star of Coastal Tuscany, where some of the most famous wines of Tuscany are made.
  • You have all day to discover Bolgheri.
  • Visit either Sassicaia or Ornellaia winery.
  • Have a fine lunch.
  • After lunch, visit another winery, either Le Macchiole or Grattamacco.
  • Farewell dinner on the beach at Michelin-star restaurant La Pineta!.

Day 8, Saturday - Departure

  • Midday, return to Florence where you can continue with your travels.
