Owners and hosts of Spanish Steps, Juan Carlos and Judy, operate the delightful Hotel Fuentes de Lucía, situated in a spectacular and untouched corner of northwest Spain. The recently converted farmhouse rests on the hillside of a green valley in the hamlet of Faedo and is part of the Parque Natural Urbiñas-La Mesa in the heart of Asturias.
The inn can accommodate 16 people in eight rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms, and either a balcony or terrace. It is perfect for your next family reunion, birthday, anniversary party, retreat, or just an excuse to escape to a mountain haven for a while. Nestled in Quirós Valley, the casa rural is surrounded by dramatic peaks, deep gorges, crystal clear rivers, and ancient forests; a paradise for those who love the great outdoors.
An intricate system of marked footpaths leads you from one small village to the next, up and over mountain passes and through river valleys. Your guides are able to take you through magnificent landscapes via well-trodden pathways, visiting remote villages where life remains unchanged and continues much as it always has.
Savor the foods, wines, and landscapes of Asturias by joining chef Juan Carlos in the very intimate setting of Fuentes de Lucia. Get to know the people in this dramatic region of northern Spain and share their culinary passion. Your hosts, Juan Carlos and Judy are a Spanish-American couple who invite you into their home, a comfortable renovated 18th century farmhouse that was once the local school and mill. This will be a semi-active cooking holiday, designed primarily so that you walk off your last culinary creation to make room for the next round!
You will begin your adventure at the central market in Oviedo to sample Iberian hams, local cheeses, and some Asturian sidra, an alcoholic cider, to wash it all down and kick start the culinary adventure nicely. Once you’re settled in at the inn, you will venture into the kitchen, roll up your sleeves, and start peeling and chopping. Plan to join your local guide for a daily two to three-hour hike along one of the many trails leading out the back door of the hotel, although it is optional. Each day you will cook up a storm in the kitchen, try local wines, and learn as you go.

Hotel Fuentes de Lucia is located 5 kilometers from the small lake of Valdemurio, where you can paddle on a kayak, spend the afternoon on the shores with a fishing pole or take a quick dip on a sunny summer day. In the next valley over, walk through the mystical canyon of Las Xanas to Pedrobeyo for a hearty lunch of Fabada, a typical Asturian white bean and chorizo stew.
Close by is the Senda del Oso, a 30 kilometer trail from Bárzana de Quirós to Trubia, which runs through these valleys following the track of an old railway line once used for transporting coal and iron ore. Taking a leisurely stroll along is a wonderful way for individuals, couples or families to spend the day whether by bike or on foot.
