Accommodation

During this holiday, you will stay in a modern four-star boutique hotel.

Program

For this exclusive trip, your home base will be San Sebastian, which is not only known for its food, but also hosts one of the most important film festivals in Europe, and has traditionally served as a luxurious summer vacation spot. Though it’s a well-known town, it still remains somewhat of a hidden gem, so Sobremesa Culinary Tours suggest you seize this opportunity to discover it while the massive tourism industry has still not taken over.

The expert team will guide you through the culinary highlights of this romantic coastal city. They will offer you two day trips to the rural Basque bliss: one to their favorite cheese producer and another to a traditional Basque cider house including a hearty traditional lunch menu, highlighting some of the best T-bone steak ever, and a classic salt cod omelet as parts of the meal.

They will also offer you a couple of free nights in case you just can’t get enough food and want to dine at more of the world-famous restaurants in the area (and they will give you recommendations for those as well).

Sample daily schedule

Day 1

After everyone has arrived and checked into the hotel, you will gather for a meet and greet and then a bar-hopping dinner of pintxos in the old town (paired with the local wine txakoli, of course).

Day 2

On your first full day, you will start out with a guided tour of La Bretxa market to stock up on ingredients for your cooking lesson. Then you are off to a lunch at a hidden gem of a restaurant that Camila loves. You will dine on the fruits of your labor after your first cooking class.

Day 3

This day brings your first out of town excursion to the (hard) cider-producing town of Astigarraga. You will visit a traditional cider house and learn about its production and then dine on a typical cider house menu, complete with some surprises that will allow you to see a vision of the culture you would never have imagined, complete with all the cider you can stomach! In the evening, you are back to your home base to enjoy some free time (perhaps a dinner at one of those life-changing Michelin-starred restaurants, if you are still hungry, that is).

Day 4

You visit another local market, San Martin, completely renovated in 2005, but still hosting all the traditional goodness, in the midst of a modern shopping mall. For lunch, you will have your second cooking class with chef Camila. You will have free time in the evening so make sure you book ahead!

Day 5

On the next day, you leave the city again, this time to an artisanal cheese producer nearby. You will get to see the sheep and make cheese first-hand! And then be served a stunning, abundant local menu. Please make sure to save space for the farewell dinner! Or at least walk it off in the afternoon, while you either hike up one of San Sebastian'shills, or shop till you drop during free time.

Day 6

Sobremesa Culinary Tours will say you goodbyes after breakfast of the last day.

Please note, the itinerary may be subject to change.

The cooking classes are designed for people of all levels of experience, from those who have never boiled an egg to experience home cooks or even trained chefs. Although you will learn new techniques and cooking styles, the focus is on the culture, with high quality ingredients prepared the Mediterranean way, which is often pretty straightforward. Always, the main point is to spend time savoring and enjoying life and food in Sobremesa style.

Included excursions

During this holiday, you will visit the cider-producing town of Astigarraga as well as to an artisanal cheese producer.

Location

This tour will take place in San Sebastian, Basque Country, Spain. San Sebastian is the foodie city to top all foodie cities; not only does it boast the most Michelin stars per capita in the world, all of its inhabitants are extremely proud of their local food tradition, and love to share it with newcomers. The Basque country is also renowned for its idyllic rural landscape, and Sobremesa Culinary Tours is excited to show you some of that as well, always using the food scene as their guiding theme. San Sebastian (or Donosti, as the locals call it) is just a lovely train ride away from Barcelona (and thus a great combo with the boutique Barcelona trip) or Madrid.

Food

During this holiday, you will be served with daily local buffet breakfast as well as local wine with meals except for on the two free nights. Sobremesa Culinary Tours are well-trained in finding the best substitutions to accommodate each person’s limitations. At their classes, they make a variety of dishes so there are always options to choose from, and even if that means not getting to try every single dish, Sobremesa promises you won’t go hungry! Please let them know your restrictions well in advance (relax, they will ask you) so that they can plan accordingly.
