Escape to the Olive Groves can be booked as a three-day tour in itself, if you are already in Barcelona, or as an add-on extension to any Barcelona tour with Sobremesa. Accommodation

You will be staying in double rooms at Mas de Flandí, a renovated 18th-century estate home. Individual rooms are available with a supplement.

Program

This 3-day tour is designed around a theme you'll absolutely love: excellent-quality extra virgin olive oil. Sobremesa has teamed up with a small producer of boutique, high-quality organic, single-varietal green olive oils, who is also the owner of an 18th-century estate with a renovated farmhouse, where you will be staying.

The olive groves will be your base, in addition to some stellar activities planned around them, you will explore the beauty of the region, including some gorgeous medieval villages and the region’s stunning natural landscape.

Day 1

On Day 1, depart Barcelona after lunch by private transportation for a 2-hour ride through scenic landscape. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the hosts at Mas de Flandí, and after settling into your rooms, owner Eduard Susanna will give you a tour of the grounds, including an explanation of the estate’s history and the varietals of olive trees he grows there.

Then, sit down to a special candlelit dinner prepared by your host, Pilar Vilasanjuan, herself. Go to bed in sync with the silence around you for a good night’s rest.

Day 2

After an abundant breakfast buffet at the house, Day 2 holds a lot in store. Begin by visiting one of the prettiest medieval villages around, Morella. Camila will point out some of her favorite places in the village and you will also have time to wander leisurely and explore the town’s highlights, including its church, as well as a bustling local commercial street with some very quaint artisanal local shops.

From Morella, head to another small village where you'll walk around a bit more to increase your appetites for the hearty lunch that awaits you at Lo Convent, an ancient convent turned hotel and restaurant, where you will enjoy the architecture as much as the food. Bellies full, get a chance to go for a digestive walk along one of the region’s small rivers.

In the afternoon, back at Mas de Flandí, get a little while to rest before gathering again for a cooking class with Camila for a light dinner. They are sure you will sleep soundly after this complete day!

Day 3

The day begins with a guided visit to the nearby town Mas de Flandí belongs to, which is perhaps one of the most special villages in the region, for reasons they will explain. (It’s also considered one of the prettiest towns in Spain.) Then, it’s back to Mas de Flandí, but this time to the olive mill, where you will get a tour of the production side and then sit down to a full, guided olive oil tasting of the Fruit & Branca range of green extra virgin olive oils.

You will even get the opportunity to purchase oils to take some more home with you, if you wish. They are hard to resist! After your tasting, it’s time to head back towards Barcelona, but not directly, you will stop mid-way for lunch at Falset, the capital of the Priorat region (where some of the most exciting wines in Spain are coming from).

After a full lunch, it’s back to busy Barcelona; your private transportation will drop you off at your hotel or at the airport, as you wish. They hope the peace, calm, and beauty of the olive groves have done their magic and you are rested, relaxed, and happy.

Location

The Matarranya region is a still somewhat hidden gem. Off-the-beaten-path, you won’t encounter masses of tourists here. Because it’s not well connected by public transportation, the region has remained somewhat pristine and removed, even though it’s relatively close to the city by private transportation.

During this holiday, 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches (Days 2 and 3), 2 dinners (Days 1 and 2), local wine with meals, an olive oil grove and mill tour and tasting, and 1 cooking class with Camila are included.

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 15% of the total price.
  • The deposit is non-refundable, if the booking is cancelled.

Seasonal information

This tour can be offered year-round, though Sobremesa’s favorite months are April-May-June and October-November. They recommend avoiding July and August, as the temperatures can be quite high in the region.
