After being picked up from your hotel, venture on a Male City tour. A guide will be with you at all times and you will visit the fish market, the local market, the President's Palace, Sultan Park, and the Friday Mosque. Stop for lunch at one of the many restaurants overlooking the water front before taking the public ferry to Villimale. There, you will join Save the Beach and discover the quieter side of city life by exploring the smaller island of Villimale, located south west of Male.

Wander the quiet streets, learn the names of local trees, visit the spice factory, and learn more about the conservation work being carried out by Save The Beach. You will also be able to sample traditional hedika at a local café on the beach. You will enjoy traditional sweet and savory snacks with black tea, before returning to Hulhumale.

Taste of Local Life Experience

You cannot beat home cooked food and, with this experience, you will live in a wonderful experience. You will not only assist in selecting the ingredients from the local market in Male, but you will also get to spend time with a local family, preparing local dishes, which you will then get to enjoy along with the family in their home.

Hulhumale, North Male Atoll, is a suburban island just a 10-minute taxi ride from Male International Airport. This artificial island was reclaimed from the sea to offer alternative living space outside of Male and whilst not a 5-star resort Hulhumale provides the ideal base for a short holiday or as a start or finishing point to a longer stay in the Maldives.

There are plenty of local coffee shops, a handful of restaurants and a small local shopping area. The beach located along the east side of the island is an endless stretch of sand and provides the ideal location to swim, snorkel or just relax after a great days diving. The capital Male is just a 20-minute ferry journey away and for those who like to end their day with a beer the only hotel serving alcohol on a local island is a short bus journey close to the airport.

The traditional food of the Maldivians is based around fish, specifically tuna, chilli, and coconuts; while white rice and roshi, a flour based flat-bread, are staple items. Fish is normally smoked, fired, barbecued, or roasted. Pork products are strictly prohibited. When eating on local islands, it is worth noting that Maldivians traditionally eat with their fingers; therefore, food is not always served piping hot. Tap water is perfectly safe for brushing your teeth; however, you are advised to drink bottled or boiled water. All food on local islands is halal.

Additional water sports, snorkelling, and excursions to visit resorts are available to make the most of your stay in this island paradise.

"We were staying on a resort during our 10 stay in Maldives and thought a day out in Male would be a good experience. We booked an afternoon cooking session with a local family (Suba). The day started with buying some food items in a local market which was great fun. This is also a good time to buy any local items you may want to take back home.We bought these delicious coconut sweets. We then took a ferry back to Hulmane where we cooked a local fish dishe at Suba's family home. We both enjoyed the experience very much"

"Ruth and the team of Secret Paradise were truly amazing in making our trip to the Maldives an amazing one! We had a great time with our guide Shafaf. We booked 2 events, preparing and cooking a local dish with a local family in their home after having gathered the groceries with Shafaf in Male city; and a Male city day tour which ended the day with a visit to the nearby island of Ville Male to relax, have tea and catch up with the passionate co-founder of the Save the Beach organization, who guided us through their profound mission to preserve the local beaches through their waste and pollution control initiatives. We simply had an amazing trip in the Maldives due to Secret Paradise, and Ruth in particular!"

"My family of 4 adults had planned to visit Maldives not exactly for the beach/water activities, but more of a cultural and scenery experience. So, a stay in one of the resorts was not really required for us. Also I needed either interconnected rooms or a suite as we all needed to stay together. I really did not have any idea what to do in Maldives if water activities were left out - this is where Ruth of secret paradise helped me to plan and decide. I was planning to stay in a Male hotel, but Ruth advised me to stay in Hulhumale which is more of a residential area with nice family beaches, mosques and restaurants. She booked me interconnecting rooms in a hotel in Hulhumale. I used secret paradise's day activities options like sunset cruise, island hopping, male city tour and taste of local life. Our guide, Kokko (real name Ibrahim), was waiting for us in the airport on arrival and took us to HM retreat in Hulhumale. Since it was windy with slight rain, the sunset cruise was postponed. The hotel was located right on Hulhumale beach stretch with restaurants and shops near. We left by speed boat for Island hopping to Hurra Island. We met some local families in the Island, saw the local boat making factory and also visited a dried fish factory, walked around the village, visited a shop selling momentos and Maldivian produced gifts ( found it expensive - be careful ) - went by boat to another island for lunch and returned back by about 4 p.m. Next day, we went for the Male city tour with our guide Ibrahim who gave us many interesting insights of buildings and monuments. We visited the food market as well as the fish market. We took the passenger barge for the trip back to Hulhumale where we had a very interesting time with a local family and had Maldivian lunch with them. This was followed by the sunset cruise in which we were lucky to see a lot of dolphins. Overall, a very enjoyable experience and would recommend to use Secret Paradise."

"Ruth, the sales director, was very accommodating by letting us know every detail of the arranged tours. When our tour guide, was late for a few minutes, we immediately received an email from her explaining the reason why the guide was late. Kokko, our tour guide was also very commendable because he was well mannered, knowledgeable, witty, and spoke very well. He even recommended a local restaurant that did not disappoint. We enjoyed our scheduled tours not only because of the scenic views but also because of him. Overall, we appreciate the prompt and excellent customer service provided by Secret Paradise. Ruth deserves being the number one tour manager / business owner."
