You will spend two nights at the Captain's Inn in Moss Landing, California. From the minute you enter the inn, you will know you have taken a step back in time. This historic property has had many well know names associated with it throughout the years. The house was built as an office building but was turned into a private residence in the mid 1900s. In recent years, it was home to the many Moss Landing marine laboratory students.

The current inn was opened in 2003 and has received a historic preservation award from the Moss Landing Chamber of Commerce and Monterey County. Aside from its historic charm, your stay at the Captain’s Inn is sure to delight your palate with the hearty, full breakfasts Chef Maldalina will prepare for you each morning.

Each of the imaginatively decorated rooms will become your own special hideaway. While rooms in the main building are more traditionally furnished, the rooms in the newer built Boat House are designed with a nautical theme. To ensure your comfort, each room includes plush top beds fitted with feather pillows along with the softest sheets, cozy robes, Wi-Fi, private phone with voice mail, TV, radio alarm, and windows that open to lovely views and salt air. Eight of the rooms have a gas fireplace.

Included excursions

Nature safari

The Elkhorn Slough safari nature tour is included in the price of this holiday. The tour starts when you step aboard one of the extremely stable Elkhorn Slough Safari pontoon boats. The knowledgeable guides will give you insight into this unique ecosystem as you slowly cruise through it. Special onboard activities for children ensure the little ones won’t get bored. Birders will especially enjoy this two-hour cruise, as Elkhorn Slough provides a home to hundreds of species of waterfowl and migratory shorebirds.

This culinary vacation will take place at the Captain’s Inn, in Moss Landing, California. The Captain’s Inn is located directly on the Old Salinas River tidal channel and next to marshes where you can see a wide variety of wildlife including shorebirds and harbor seals.

The story of Moss Landing dates back to 1866, when Charles Moss, a wealthy retired ship captain from Texas, moved his family to the coast of California to build a new homestead. Captain Moss soon saw the potential in this new location and along with his friend, Cato Vierra, a Portuguese whaler, constructed a 200 feet wharf, establishing shipping facilities and a pier for commercial water traffic.

Around 1890, the Pajaro Valley Consolidated Railroad connected the sugar manufacturing plant at Speckles to the small town of Watsonville via Moss Landing. Then, in 1917, a whaling station of considerable capacity was established at Moss Landing. Industry followed, with fishermen, whalers, and salt pond operators, all making a successful living from the ocean.

An important contributing factor to the success was the gold rush fever, as demand for all kinds of products greatly increased, and it was from Moss Landing where sugar beets, potatoes, lumber, and other products were shipped to the gold boom town of San Francisco. Sadly, in 1906 the earthquake destroyed the wharf and much of the infrastructure.

Today, Moss Landing is home to the marine laboratories and has an international reputation for excellence in marine science research and education. It might be a small working seaside town, but it also has the reputation of being home to fantastic restaurants and culinary experiences. If you like Mexican food, then the Whole Enchilada is for you. Or try the Moss Landing Café serving breakfast and lunch from Monday to Thursday, then on Friday and Saturday nights, the white table cloths appear and the music starts for a very upscale dining experience.

Like artichokes? Many roadside spots offer this savoury treat. Just south of town but still within walking distance, a farmer's market is open year-round, featuring local strawberries, Brussels sprouts, and of course artichokes, along with other very locally grown produce.

Breakfast at Captain's Inn

Your stay at the Captain’s Inn is sure to delight your palate. Chef Maldalina will prepare your full breakfast each morning with fresh fruit, juices, frittatas, eggs of all kinds, and then those garlic potatoes which are so good and also a fantastic way to start the day. The breakfast is all-you-can-eat, so don’t be shy about asking for “more please”.

Then there is Chef Maldalina’s famous soup and salad supper. After a cold hard day out on the ocean watching the whales, it is a delight to tuck into a bowl of Chef Maldalina’s hot and hearty soup or chowder. Along with the crunchy fresh salad and her delicious hot garlic bread, you feel pampered just like you were at grandma’s house.

But remember, Chef Maldalina’s words, “I don’t like our guests to ever leave the table still hungry”. So again, don’t be bashful when you ask for a second or even third helping.

Lunch at the Whole Enchilada

The locals from the Monterey Bay area have been enjoying the savoury authentic Mexican food here since the 1980s. You too can enjoy traditional dishes such as the seafood burrito, pescado de sole, and the very special enchiladas de mole. If you prefer lighter fare, then check out the ensaladas y sopas on their menu. The chicken torilla soup is a favorite along with the las brisas ensalada. No matter what your preference is, you will be pleased!

Dinner at Phil’s Fish Market and Eatery

For dinner, your destination is Phil’s Fish Market and Eatery, a locally owned family business serving only the freshest local and sustainable seafood for over 30 years. They have been on "Throwdown with Bobby Flay", named the best beach restaurant by BBC Travel, featured on the Food Network, and written about in newspapers and magazines such as Sunset Magazine.

The dinner menu changes with the seasons, but appetizers can feature oysters, sautéed in butter, garlic, shallots and champagne. For your main, try the rock shrimp and sea scallops linguini served with Roma tomatoes, green and black olives, artichoke hearts, and butter. For a real seafood experience try the halibut marsala, sautéed with marsala wine and caramelized red onions.

If seafood is not your choice, maybe the fettuccine alfredo served with a chicken breast will be more to your liking. Take your time looking over the large menu and remember, save room for dessert!

Things to do (optional)

Make time to treat yourself during your stay to a relaxing reflexology foot massage or an hour-long soothing body massage. You can also choose between facials, trigger point massages, and even a prenatal massage. How lovely is that? The spa and care products used are carefully hand-crafted in-house, and gift packages can be purchased on site.

Extend your relaxing massage treatment! Add time to your massage for an additional 40 USD for each 30-minute increment.

Facial massage

The treatment stimulates pressure points to reduce facial lines without the use of products or chemicals, gently plumping the skin and revitalizing the complexion. A 60-minute facial is 95 USD.

Prenatal massage

This type of massage can relieve many of the normal discomforts experienced during pregnancy, and can also help relieve anxiety and depression caused by hormonal changes. Depending on where you are in your pregnancy, your therapist may utilize a variety of techniques to address your specific needs. One 60-minute prenatal massage is 120 USD.

Reflexology session

This is a delightful way to relax and cast away the cares and stress life may bring. You can choose between one hour and one hour and a half of soothing and beneficial pressure point therapy. This is not your average foot massage, as reflexology benefits the entire body. Your feet are greeted with a nice mineral salt foot soak, then pampered with a naturally soft sugar scrub, all followed by a soothing traditional knee-to-toe deep foot massage leaving your feet and entire body renewed. The price is 65 USD per session.

Romance package

You can choose to have roses or mixed bouquet flowers, hand-crafted chocolates, candles on, and a choice of sparkling cider wait for you in your room. Stay in bed until 2 p.m. with late check-out for 30 USD.

Boat House guestrooms only can also add in-room massage for two for an additional 190 USD. Because of the size limitations of the rooms, massages will be given in succession.

Trigger point massage

This massage alleviates trigger point-related pain by identifying the exact location and intensity of discomfort and targeting and releasing constricted areas in the muscles. You can book a 60-minute trigger point massage for 120 USD.
