Accommodation

During this holiday, you will stay in various accommodations. For the first two days, you will be staying in Viana do Castelo. Then, you will be staying in a beautiful four-star wine hotel where you can visit the vineyards. On the fourth day, you will spend the night in a centrally located four-star hotel in Porto. All of the accommodations are handpicked to make sure you have a relaxing and comfortable stay.

Program

Day 1: Barcelos and Viana Do Castelo

Your private driver will collect you from Porto (airport or your hotel) and drive you to the pretty town of Barcelos. The famous legend of the cockerel originates here, which explains the giant cockerels you will see around the historical center.

Just outside Barcelos, you will find the first winery where the owner will personally show you around the wine estate. His family has been producing wines here for over four centuries and cultivates grape varieties such as Arinto, Fernão Pires and Loureiro to make prize-winning white vinho verde wines.

After lunch, you will head north to the coastal town of Viana do Castelo, home to medieval streets and the magnificent Santa Luzia basilica overlooking the coastal area.

Your final stop for the day is a beautiful farm house within a small wine estate that dates back to 1710 and will be your home for the next two nights. Once you’ve settled in, enjoy a guided tour of the winery, and taste the quinta's organically-produced wines. Relax amid the tranquil surroundings for the rest of the afternoon and take a dip in the inviting swimming pool.

Dinner this evening is at your accommodation. You will enjoy delicious local cuisine paired with the white wine made from grapes grown in the Lima Valley. The climate here suits the Loureiro varietal perfectly, enabling it to achieve its full aromatic expression and flavors.

Day 2: Melgaco and Ponte De Lima

After a tasty breakfast, you will start the day with a tour of Melgaço, another beautiful border town overlooking the River Minho.

You will start the day’s wine tours and tastings at a 17th century wine cellar where the owner of this boutique winery will be there to greet you in person. Together with three other young winemakers, he is part of the Vinho Verde Young Project which introduces new trends in wine-making to produce top quality wines.

Your next stop is not far away at one of the first Portuguese wine-producers to use the Alvarinho grape variety. The climate and geography are perfect for it and this award-winning winery has placed Alvarinho and Melgaço firmly on the Vinho Verde map. Nearby, you will find their pedigree Bisaro pigs, which produce top quality cured pork.

Naturally, you will have the opportunity to taste their produce with a fabulous tasting lunch which combines fresh organic fruit and vegetables from their gardens with traditional smoked meats and, of course, excellent Alvarinho wines. After this deliciously memorable lunch, it is time to head south again to explore the attractive historical town of Ponte de Lima with the help of your guide. For a fine dining experience this evening, Portugal Green Walks can arrange a pairing menu at one of our favorite restaurants.

Day 3: Guimarães and Celorico De Basto

You will start the day with a morning tour of the UNESCO sites in Guimarães before heading to Celorico de Basto to visit another selection of special wine estates. You will prepare for your afternoon of wine tasting by tucking into beautifully prepared traditional Portuguese dishes at a stately home where you will be welcomed by the owner.

You will also have the opportunity to explore the beautiful 17th century manor house with its period furnishings and decor as well as the artistic Baroque gardens full of camellias. Before leaving Celorico de Basto, there is one more winery to visit. You will be enthusiastically welcomed for a tour of the modern facilities and wine tasting with spectacular mountain views.

Tonight’s accommodation is a beautiful four star wine hotel where you can visit the vineyards and the cellars, and sample a fresh and crisp green wine made from various combinations of grape varieties. Unwind in this peaceful setting, listening to the birds as they settle for the evening before savoring fine Portuguese cuisine at the onsite restaurant.

Day 4: Amarante and Porto

After checking out, you will enjoy the Minho countryside as your driver takes you to another charming riverside town. Amarante’s focal point is the São Gonçalo Bridge and church and your guide will explain the interesting history behind these and Amarante’s other highlights. Your final winery visit of this vinho verde tour is an ancient property with views of the majestic Douro River. Here, you will have the opportunity to appreciate the rugged landscape on a tour of the vineyards and winery.

Your mouthwatering lunch will be paired with the quinta’s wines, including one produced from another Vinho Verde grape varietal, Avesso, an Arinto and a rosé made from 100% Touriga Nacional. The green wines here reflect the transition between the Vinho Verde and Douro wine regions bearing a resemblance to more mature table wines.

Relax and enjoy the drive to Porto where you will spend the night in a centrally located four star hotel. The rest of the day is yours to explore the city as you wish, although Portugal Green Walks can arrange a guided tour if you like.

Day 5: Onward bound

When it’s time for you to leave, Portugal Green Walks will take you to Porto Airport.
