The Perfect Way is the Portuguese Way

My husband and I walked the 'Portuguese Way' from Valenca to Santiago de Compostela in early October. We arranged all the details with Jose at Portugal Green Walks and the entire process was simple and straight forward.

The hotels were all satisfactory however some were better than others mainly due to the location and internet connect. The hotel at Caldas de Reis was a real surprise and we loved soaking in the outdoor thermal swimming pool after a half day of walking. The rural accommodation at Padron was very pretty but we would have preferred to stay in the centre of Padron. The internet didn't work at all at the Padron hotel which is unacceptable these days.

We were very grateful to Jose who altered our trip slightly due to an injury. We had planned to stay two nights at the end of our walk in Santiago de Compostela but as my toe was very sore (due to an ill fitting shoe), we split the last day of walking into two and stayed a night in Teo.

I found the walk more difficult than I was expecting as I would class myself as a fit 56 year old. My preference would be to walk 15k per day. Although, I had worn my trekking shoes for over 150k before walking the Camino - I still got an injury from my worn in shoes.

Overall the route is easy and not difficult to walk unless of course you get an injury or pain develops somewhere in your body such as feet or knees. The Portuguese Way is a beautiful and an interesting route through quaint little villages, buzzing small cities, through forests, vineyards, meadows, alongside rivers, over ancient roman bridges.....so beautiful. You will love it.

I wrote a blog about my Camino experience which is public and available on my website 'Progressive Traveller'.

Green Walks were a delight to communicate with and I would highly recommend this company to my family, friends and colleagues. The cost is very affordable and good value.

A big thanks to Jose and the team at Portugal Green Walks and we hope to do business with you again when we walk another route in the next year or so.

A very local experience.

We had the pleasure of doing the Douro walk which indeed was an experience beyond the classic tourist things you can do. The planning with Paulo the manager was very easy as he was helpful and adaptable to the wishes we had for the trip. He both arranged storrage of our luggage since we had to return to the city and checked the time schedule for the train so we easily could get the trip we wanted.

Our guide was very friendly and hiked with us through his vineyard where we could taste both fresh grapes, almonds and other local fruits from the plantation. After the hike we had the most beautiful homemade lunch at his house. Together with a boatride on the Douro river and a wine tour and tasting Portugal Green Walks put together a great itinerary and made the day totally unforgettable. I can highly recommend consulting Portugal Green Walks when planning a vacation in Portugal.

Porto & Douro Guided Walks

We booked 2 guided walks with Portugal Green Walks - a half day Porto walking tour & a full day Douro 9 km walk followed by vineyard lunch, boat trip and winery tour. Both were simply terrific, well planned and well executed by Paolo and his team. We were accompanied by 2 guides in Porto - an architect and an art historian and had the most enriching experience. We saw, heard, smelt and experienced Porto through the layers of history, culture, people and food. The Douro tour was stunning! Our guide Francisco lives in the area on his Quinta that has been in the family for 600 years! His knowledge, love and passion for the Douro Valley and Portugal shone right through and we felt so privileged to experience the Douro with him and enjoy it through his eyes. A kind, gentle and generous host we enjoyed a delicious (well-earned) lunch at his Quinta with port & tonics, wine and a port bottled in 1961. The quality of guided walks are only as good as the guides and Paulo has some of the best on his team. Thank you to all for sharing your beautiful country with us.
