Featured distillery

Whitefish Handcrafted Spirits

Whitefish Handcrafted Spirits are “rugged, never rough.” The distillery is on a mission to create some of the best handcrafted spirits in the world as self-proclaimed “half-alchemists, half-artists.” The creative geniuses and craftspeople taste and tweak over and over until creating something of such immutable character that they are proud to put their name on it and pour it into a glass to serve it up with style. As a special attraction for Montana Master Chefs (MMC), Whitefish will be creating an exclusive rye whiskey that will be on par with a 10- to 12-year rye. The creation will only be available to MMC guests.

Featured wineries

Kosta Browne Winery

Kosta Browne has been making wine for nearly 20 years. After almost nine vintages under their belt something curious started to happen - interest in what the winery was doing grew and the company began to gain recognition for our winemaking style. A long-awaited “overnight success” struck and the challenge became less one of “staying alive” to one of trying to keep up with the attention and demands while continuing a commitment to quality. California Pinot Noir endures in the fine wine world and Kosta Browne is delighted to be a continued part of that conversation.

Melville Winery

Founded in 1989, Melville is a family-owned and operated estate winery with roots in Sonoma County’s Knights Valley, where Ron Melville grew high-quality and greatly sought-after grapes. In 1996, Melville’s desire to grow cold-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah brought Melville Vineyards to the Sta. Rita Hills, located in the Western Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara County. Today, Melville and his son, Chad, uphold a tradition as one of the most highly-regarded estates in California. Chad Melville will attend Montana Master Chefs as a special guest.

Steele Wines

Jed Steele, owner and winemaker of Steele Wines, has been involved in making wine in California for nearly 50 years. He started as a cellar worker at Stony Hill in Napa Valley in 1968 and then attended the University of California, Davis, to earn a master’s degree in enology. Steele then was involved in starting Edmeades in the Anderson Valley and, ten years later, Kendall-Jackson. Steele was at Kendall-Jackson for the first nine vintages that the wildly successful winery produced. He left the year the winery broke the million cases per year production mark. In 1991, Steele Wines was born.

Using a hand-held GPS unit, you'll punch in coordinates, which will point you in the direction of a hidden "cache." Sporting Clays

Sporting Clays is a challenging, fun and competitive clay target game that simulates actual field hunting. Shoot on specially designed courses that resemble real-life field conditions; the lure of the game lies in its realism. At Paws Up, our Montana sporting clays installation features a 10-station course that throws a diversity of aerial target presentations. Wagon team driving

At Paws Up, you will journey into Americas adventurous past and have time to reflect on how idyllic life might have been before the railroads, cars, highways and eventually airplanes accelerated the pace of life. What was it like before we merely climbed into a train, jumped into a car or hopped into an airplane? What was it like to be satisfied when a full days journey was 15 miles? Now you can experience the original form of wheeled travel, by learning to drive a wagon pulled by a team of horses.

While you will not have to contend with the adversity of our pioneer ancestors, you will understand the skill and stamina needed to drive a team of horses under harness. The perfect horses for your first Montana teamster experience are Pete and Repeat, our full-brother Norwegian fjords. With them at your command, you will redefine your definition of driving, along with learning what Gee-Haw really means. For ages 12+.

Wilderness workshops

From interactive culinary weekends to educational workshops and holiday celebrations, there are a plethora of events to choose from. We look forward to welcoming you to Montana in 2016!

Discretely nestled on the edge of an expansive meadow, in the waving shade of soaring pines, sits spa town at Paws Up. Spa town is a colony of pristine white tents stitched together by a wooden boardwalk, situated just past an authentic babbling brook and nestled among towering pines. The welcome tents feature full baths and showers, while individual treatment tents are fashioned with a lovely sink, a heated massage table, and a view of the meadows, spotted with horses. A traditional "spa" sound track isn't required because the brook, chirping birds and a rustle of the wind in the trees above is played daily by mother nature herself. Paws Up is the finest of all Montana spa resorts and gives new meaning to the term "getting lost" in the woods.

"The Resort at Paws Up is truly amazing, it was a dream destination and a dream trip. Montana and the resort were more than we could have asked for. I cannot say enough about the "family" of people who work there. They made us feel like the most important people on the resort. We miss them and our dream to visit again. There is no need to buy food for the cabin, the food at the resort is the best we have had, from breakfast to dinner and dessert, they will not let you leave hungry. If you have a chance to go to this resort, take it!"

"We loved every minute. The food is fantastic, staff is fabulous, setting is magical. We stayed at Pinnacle and loved the glamping experience. Waking up to warm coffee and a toasty fire at the Pavilion was lovely. We did aerial, horseback riding, hiking, lake house and rafting and all were absolutely great. There were opportunities to meet other guests during activities or dinner and everyone was friendly, happy and easy to get along with. I think this is a great place for families of any age as well as couples."

"We were 8 adults and 5 kids ages 4, 10, 12, 14, and 15 years old. Each family had their own tent. Montana is beautiful, the night skies are awesome! Paws Up was the perfect place. The activity list is extensive, the food delicious, the staff is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. We spent 5 fun-filled days here and everyone would like to return."

"I can't say enough about Paws Up and I can't wait to return. I was part of a group of 40 on a work retreat / incentive vacation. The service was impeccable, and the food delicious. The cabins are a bit far from the main restaurant, but you can use their app to ask for a pick up, or anything else really, and we discovered that snow shoes were the most efficient and fun way to get around the ranch. The spa provided a terrific deep tissue massage."

"I just got back from spending 3 nights at Paws Up for their first winter season being open and the Winterfest Culinary event. I stayed in one of their luxury homes and it was amazing. The attention to detail with the decor was off-the-hook. I'd call it country chic! I went snowmobiling, dog sledding, and had a massage too! It was my first for all except the spa - I'm an expert at that! What an experience. The scenery was so gorgeous and truly what I would call a winter wonderland. The staff could not be friendlier or more accommodating, and it just goes on and on. Good food, good drinks, friendly people, and I even got a big wet kiss from the owner's dog, who apparently does not offer kisses up to just anyone. I scored! I've been home for just under a week and I miss everyone! I'd love to go back with my dog. What an awesome place to bring your best friend, as they are a dog friendly resort!"

"Our family of five spent a week at The Resort at Paws Up based on a recommendation from a friend. From the moment you arrive at this stunning and extremely well-maintained ranch, you are welcomed, remembered, and treated like family. The activities are endless - from snowmobiling and cross country skiing, to horseback riding, and downhill sledding. Our family took advantage of everything they had to offer. You can choose to do as little or as much as you want and design the vacation that is right for you. "

"Mealtime was exceptional; the menus change daily, because they only use the freshest ingredients. One of my children has a food allergy and they completely took care to ensure that he was happy. The accommodations were beyond comfortable. you are staying in plush homes that you may never want to leave, complete with a Christmas tree, food, and beverages! We plan to return to this resort this summer to experience all they have to offer at that time of year and we very much hope to go to Paws Up again and again. This resort is very personal and truly special and I strongly encourage a vacation there!"

"I have looked at going to Paws Up for a number of years, as the photos have always just looked amazing and tugged me to want to go. Well, I finally got to go and loved it! It exceeded the beauty of the photos, the food and service were the icing on the cake. My wife and I just soaked all of it in daily. I loved all their special touches, as Nadine has such an incredible eye for detail and service. She and Dave have done a marvellous job at creating this little piece of heaven. They definitely know how to plus something up. I highly recommend going on the 4 wheeler rides, riding the horses, conquering the grizzly man course, and practicing your skeet shooting! This is a 5-star resort and experience."

"I've never written a review this quickly after a visit. I am compelled to because the experience was that good! We were celebrating our 15th year wedding anniversary, so we stayed in the honeymoon tent in the Cliffside camp. It could not have been more stunning! The butlers were so helpful and accommodating and the chefs prepared wonderful meals. I was also planning a few surprises that the concierge staff could not have been more helpful with! For a high-end glamping experience, it is well worth it!"

"We had the most amazing experience at Paws Up ranch. The ranch and guest homes were simply amazing. This is definitely not a roughing it kind of experience. We were with a large group and had a discount for our lodging and, I imagine, also for our food. The staffs were incredibly friendly and accommodating and the food was simply amazing. We participated in a number of activities. Note that many of these are free, which will offset the cost you will pay for accommodations. Each home was beautifully decorated in Montana style. I actually think this home was a little nicer than mine in Seattle. This is definitely not a cabin. Make sure to visit their website, the photos reflect reality. A great time was at Paws Up!"

"Wow! It is hard to put into words what an amazing place Paws Up is but I'll give it a shot. Our group just got back from a couples retreat at the resort. This place is simply magical! Everything from start to finish is luxury, without compromising the Montana ranch experience. I can't wait to go back! We travel and vacation a lot but nothing compares to the experience at Paws Up and once you've been to Paws Up, it's difficult to stay away. Above all, the staff is incredible. A lot of hard work and planning went into organizing this retreat and we couldn't have done it without the resort's exceptional staff. To name a few, we are thankful for the professionalism and hard work of Stephanie, Nico, Gabe, chef Ben, John, Eddy, Taylor, Kristy, Margit, Riley, and everyone else from the activities staff, transportation crew, front desk, housekeeping, spa, kitchen, bar, and wait staff that made our stay incredible! You all did an amazing job! Bravo! Paws Up is definitely a place we will return to with family and friends and will, more than likely, be our home away from home! Until next time."

"Our family vacation to Paws Up has easily secured the position of best ever. I planned the trip and had very high expectations, but didn't share much information with my husband and sons (ages 8 and 11) because all too often, resorts over promise and under deliver. This was a rare instance, where the experience totally eclipsed my expectations. We loved the laid-back vibe and understated elegance, paired with exquisite attention to detail at Paws Up. Afterward, my son told someone that the kids menu was awesome, and that (no offense), but Paws Up was even better at grilling steak than mom and dad. I had to explain that the steak in question was filet mignon, and that I'd never actually served it to the kids at home. Rest assured that the adult menu was equally impressive to my husband and me. From the food, to the rafting, to kids corps, to the Grizzlyman Trail, and watching World Cup at Tank; we loved it all. I can't wait to return as soon as schedules permit."

"This is the first review I have ever written for any place in my entire life. I recently had the privilege of spending the Memorial Day weekend at Paws Up for their Montana Grill Masters Event. Words cannot do justice to this event. All I can tell you is, drop what you are doing immediately and get to Paws Up the fastest way you can. Do not hesitate, walk out of your board meeting and go to Montana. Now! You will not regret it. The atmosphere, cuisine, hospitality, and company far exceeded any of my previous experiences in what I consider to be a well-traveled life. It was a magical weekend. Go there, really, now!"
