The grounds at Mont Rochelle cover 39 hectares (about 100 acres) and you’re welcome to go exploring. A favorite activity for many of the guests is picnicking on the estate; the kitchen can arrange a well-stocked picnic basket with a chilled bottle of wine (or two!). There are two restaurants, a cozy bar, a spa, a gym, and a heated outdoor pool. That’s not forgetting a 37-hectare vineyard and wine cellar of course.

Mont Rochelle’s vineyard

The vineyards are situated between 250 meters and 400 meters above sea level exposing the grapes to a range of microclimates. Mediterranean-like conditions found in the Western Cape means dry summers and high winter rainfalls of 1000 millimeters. The Franschhoek Valley also experiences the south-easter which helps bring in cooler air allowing for a longer ripening period.

The rooms

All rooms come with Africology branded bathroom amenities, tea and coffee facilities, a Nespresso machine, postcards with stamps, a safety deposit box, hairdryer, a well-stocked inclusive mini bar, bluetooth Bose speaker sound system, and flat screen TV with selected channels. The minibar in the Manor House bunk room is stocked with age-appropriate snacks and drinks. Hair straighteners and plug adapters are available on request. Every room also has a dual air conditioning / heating system that you can adjust to your own comfort level.

Children are very welcome to stay at Mont Rochelle year-round and Mont Rochelle has the Pinotage and Cap Classique suites which are able to accommodate children on single beds. Mont Rochelle has children’s games plus a TV, DVD player, and games console for extra entertainment. Babysitting can be arranged and a charge will apply but please advise at the time of booking if this may be required.

Shiraz Room

There are four Shiraz Rooms with king-size beds and all feature courtyard or valley views.

Merlot Room

The six Merlot Rooms are larger than the Shiraz Rooms and also boast king-size beds with valley views.

Cabernet Room

The six Cabernet Rooms are located in the Vineyard Wing and all include a private terrace overlooking the valley.

Program

Wine tasting

The wine tasting isn't just a special event, it’s an everyday occurrence. Mont Rochelle can organize wine tastings in a variety of locations, including in the restaurants, bar, or in the wine cellar (as you might expect!). Mont Rochelle cultivates grapes of the Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties amongst a few others.

Cellar visits

The 150-year-old wine cellar was previously used as a fruit packing shed for the early settlers. Since being converted to a traditional wine cellar, Mont Rochelle can now process close to 110 tons of grapes in a season, these smaller volumes afford more concentration on quality rather than quantity. Stainless steel tanks aid in the making of the crisp clean whites, while barrels are favored for the red winemaking.

Food

At Mont Rochelle, the food served is a blend of international dishes with a healthy nod to the varied nature of South Africa cuisine, paired naturally with some superb local vintages. The wrap-around views of the Franschhoek valley do steal the show somewhat, but you can be sure the chefs have been focusing on dishes made with fresh, seasonal ingredients.

If you want to have lunch or dinner in Franschhoek, there is a wide range of restaurants in the area so please ask a member of Mont Rochelle team for a recommendation. They can reserve a table for you and organize taxis if you don’t have a car and would like to sample some more of the region’s wines.

The menus are one of the highlights of your stay, but Mont Rochelle understands that some people have special requirements and personal favorites too. Special food and beverages or simple snacks and light meals can be prepared according to your child’s tastes. Let them know in advance and they’ll do their best to make sure they have exactly what you need.

How to get there

Recommended Airports

Driving directions from Cape Town International Airport (CPT)

  • Follow the exit signs at the airport to the N2 highway traveling away from central Cape Town towards Somerset West.
  • After 3.2 kilometers, take the exit marked R300 on your left which will connect you to the N1 highway towards Paarl / Worcester. Once you have joined the N1, follow it for roughly 40 kilometers.
  • Take exit 47, which is signposted for Klapmuts / Stellenbosch / Wellington.
  • Turn right onto the R44 in the direction of Stellenbosch. Butterfly World will be on your left.
  • Pass through a traffic light and then you’ll cross a bridge over the railway. After 300 meters, turn left onto the R45 which is signposted for Franschhoek. Follow this road for almost nine kilometers passing wine estates Glen Carlou, Rupert and Rothschild, and later Vrede and Lust.
  • This road comes to a natural end at a T-junction just after you’ve crossed a disused railway. Turn right onto the R45 signposted to Franschhoek (two strands of the same road merge here).
  • You will now drive towards Franschhoek roughly 18 kilometers through an area called Simondium, passing L’Ormarins, and later La Motte wine estates.
  • As you reach the center of Franschhoek Village, turn right into Bordeaux Street (you’ll first pass Kruger and De Larey Streets on the right) and follow that road. From this point, Mont Rochelle is signposted.
  • At the bottom of Bordeaux Street, carry on straight as the road veers to the left. This is a short section of Cabriere Street and then turn right onto Daniel Hugo Street. Keep following the signs to Mont Rochelle Hotel and Vineyard, you've got just over a kilometer to go.
  • You’ve now arrived at Mont Rochelle.
