Las Chimeneas is an elegant collection of village houses that has been welcoming guests to the Alpujarra since 1998. There are nine lovely rooms, all with fabulous views across the hills to the sea in the far distance. They each provide very comfortable accommodation, with plenty of antiques and books and nooks and crannies, together with a delightful little restaurant that will surprise you by the quality of its freshly made seasonal produce.

Casa las Chimeneas is an extremely spacious house, which has been restored in the local style and is furnished with authentic antiques throughout. In addition, there are also three self-catering studios / apartments which come fully equipped and which enjoy wood fires and stunning views.

There are en-suite bathroom facilities for each of the large bedrooms, each of which has its own private balcony or terrace and there is an ample living / dining room with open wood fire and a terrace with breathtaking views from which you can enjoy an evening barbecue or a dip in the pool.

Early February is an industrious time in the Alpujarras. Everyone is gathering in the olive harvest which will provide their families with oil for the year. It is also the time when you can stop and gaze upon the wonder which is the almond blossom in the Sierra Nevada.

A stroll between two villages is scheduled before lunch from the traditional wood fired oven at Jubar. You will also visit a local bodega and taste some wines. Dinner at a restaurant.

  • Olive harvesting at the Finca with a lunchtime wood fired paella and flatbread workshop. Evening sherry tasting in the main house followed by dinner.

Tuesday, February 9, 2016

You will have a tapas making class with Holly, David and the Las Chimeneas cooks, Sole and Conchi, followed by lunch. You will also have the chance to join an afternoon walk in the hills above the village finishing at the olive mill to meet Adolfo, the miller, and see the mill in action. Followed by an evening olive and olive oil tasting in the main house. Dinner at a restaurant.

Trip to Yegen to visit an artisan jamon producer and taste some of the products. You will have lunch in Yegen and then walk back to Mairena. In the evening, you will have a Spanish cheese and charcuterie tasting followed by dinner.

  • After a chorizo making workshop you will have lunch. You will be able to join an afternoon walk through almond groves and have dinner at a restaurant.

A trip to Almeria is scheduled and you will have a tour of the fish market and castle and then have lunch at a Moroccan tearoom followed by a cava tasting and fish dinner.

During your trip, you will experience many of the local traditional flavors and tastes.     "There were just two of us on the two day artisan baking course, which meant that we had David's undivided attention throughout. He is an excellent teacher. I was looking to improve technique and I learnt a lot. We stayed overnight in the bed and breakfast which was excellent. Overall, a great success. David and Holly are a class act."

    "For anyone interested in baking bread, this is a great place to spend a weekend. David and Holly offer a relaxed but information packed weekend teaching the techniques of baking good artisan bread. There were just four of us in this course and we all left with a variety of bread to take home. The course included a good lunch on both days. I stayed at Firmount house in a peaceful, beautiful and quiet room with a fine view towards Dartmouth followed by a hearty full English breakfast before the second day of the course started. There was plenty of room to park the car on the quiet road beside the place. In the evening, we caught the passenger ferry to Dartmouth for an evening meal. This was a very enjoyable weekend and I hope to return in the future. I highly recommend it."

    " It was a brilliant interactive cookery course. Our Tapas experience far exceeded my expectations, the simplicity of the demonstrations and practicing our cookery skills was great. Holly opened up her kitchen to us all with a cheery smile and a professional attitude. The day ran seamlessly. However, we managed to prepare and cook a large number of Tapas, which we all enjoyed with generous amounts of wine, after the knives were safely put away. It was a great experience. I will definitely do it again. Thank you for a really good experience."

    "What a great day! From the moment you arrive you are made to feel welcome in this family kitchen. The day was relaxed, and it was a small group ensuring you were all involved. We learned how to cook a range of dishes, and got to eat them as a relaxed lunch. I would highly recommend taking one of the courses offered.     "Manna is set in a homely bed and breakfast, a converted Victorian house overlooking Dartmouth and its estuary. Manna offers a friendly, helpful and generous spirited suite of cooking courses. We did the fish and it was superb, cracking the monster crab, filleting, cooking stock, mussels, flatfish, paella, mayonnaise and washed down with a little vin blanc. I highly recommend it."
