Cortona, on the hilltop north of Lake Trasimeno, keeps the thick strata dating back to the Etruscan up to the Renaissance. A city that unites urban qualities and monumental spaces, filled with art and history, with glimpses of rural life, where the monasteries' small gates, the greenery surrounded small churches, the houses that climb steeply to the top of the hill, everything vibrates with the flavor of the sleepy agrestal villages hidden in the Tuscan countryside.

The mighty Etruscan walls, honed by centuries and by the wind, enclose a huge treasure trove of art and culture: from the Etruscans to Fra Angelico, from Luca Signorelli to Pietro Berrettini; all to leave you breathless and awed by such beauty.

Events: National Antique Fair, end of August and first two weeks in September; Archidado re-enactment of the medieval joust; Festival of the Chianina beef-steak; Tuscan Sun Festival, first two weeks in August.

Montepulciano, which history says was founded by the Etruscan Porsenna and of which there is proof of its existence dating to 714 BC. The numerous masterpieces by Renaissance artists have given it the name of "Pearl of the Sixteenth Century" and now also thanks to the production of Vino Nobile it has become world famous.
