Accommodation

During the food tour, you will be staying at La Villa des Dentelles, Provence, France. Beaumes is the home-village of La Villa des Dentelles, a luxury guesthouse that is nestled in the Provence countryside, between woods, vineyards, and saffron culture. You will be amazed by its panoramic breathtaking view on the Dentelles de Montmirail mountains, especially at the sunset. Absolutely unique!

La Villa des Dentelles villa offers five elegantly decorated rooms and suite, with en suite bathroom equipped with walking shower. Each room or suite is in beige, grey, and white colors trends, furnished with stylish antiques and king-size or two single beds. Modern amenities include minibar, safety lock, hairdryer, bathrobe, toiletries, and etc. Free Wi-Fi connections are available in all rooms. The villa has a pool and a summer kitchen with a washing machine at the guests' disposal.

Program

Day 1: Welcome to Provence (Two miles, easy, 200 feet elevation gain and loss)

You will be picked up at Avignon TGV train station which is a direct express train from Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG). You will be transferred to La Villa des Dentelles nearby Beaumes de Venise for check-in with a welcome drink and snack. You will have time to rest before a short walk to Sainte-Madeleine abbey monastery. There will be a gourmet food and wine pairing dinner at the guest house. Overnight.

Day 2: Luberon to Rustrel and Roussillon (Five miles, easy to moderate, 350 feet elevation gain)

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Roussillon. In the morning, there will be a 3-hour walk through pine tree forest and world's largest natural ocher queries, creating a rainbow of colorful sands, from pale yellows to deep reds and even purples. The path goes to Rustrel quaint village where you can admire a 360 degree panoramic outstanding landscape.

You will discover Roussillon hilltop village before returning back to La Villa des Dentelles. There will be a well being massage for two people at the guest house followed by picnic lunch. Then, you will have dinner and overnight at La Villa des Dentelles.

Day 3: Dentelles de Montmirail (seven miles, easy to moderate, 400 feet elevation gain and loss)

Just south of Vaison-la-Romaine, a fringe of jagged rock known as the Dentelles (or lace) de Montmirail rises abruptly above the hills. The hike weaves among oak forests and hidden vineyards, following the ridge of the Dentelles to Gigondas picturesque medieval village which is well known for one of the top-ranked Côtes-du-Rhône wine.

You will visit the village and its 11th-century church and Romanesque chapel. There will be food and wine pairing tasting lunch in Gigondas followed by afternoon 3-hour hills walk to Sablet medieval village.There will be a well being massage for two people at the guest house followed by picnic lunch. Then, you will have dinner and overnight at La Villa des Dentelles.

Day 4: Vaison la Romaine and hilltop villages including Gigondas (four miles, easy to moderate, 200 feet elevation gain)

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Vaison la Romaine. Tuesdays welcome one of the biggest Provence open-air market set into the all town. You will have your lunch at O'Naturelles restaurant (home-made organic food). In the afternoon, there will be a walking tour to Vaison medieval perched village, and to Seguret then.

You will enjoy gourmet dinner at a Michelin restaurant. Overnight.

Day 5: Luberon to Gordes to Senanques (nine miles, easy to moderate, 750 feet elevation gain and loss)

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Gordes. You will start the guided walk in Gordes medieval perched village overlooking the Calavon valley. With your expert guide, you will head into the thyme-laden hills, on walking paths lined with ancient stone walls and shepherd's huts. The paths will lead you directly to Sénanque Abbey, nestled in the valley and framed by its lavender fields.

The 12th century monastery has housed Cistercian monks for the past 850 years. You can visit the abbey before you return to Gordes by foot, on a trail with outstanding aerial views. Time free in Gordes. You will have your picnic lunch in the afternoon and followed by dinner in the evening. Overnight at La Villa des Dentelles.

Day 6: Pays de Sault to the lavender route (Four miles, easy to moderate, 300 feet elevation gain and loss)

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Sault, capital of lavender. The lavender starts blooming from early to mid June and it's harvested in July. You will enjoy a morning walk through lavender fields planted on a high plateau. Your expert guide will explain everything you have to learn about the precious flower. The route joins a botanical path, lined with fragrant lavender plantations, along the foothills of Mont Ventoux.

You will have your lunch in Sault and free time in the village before visiting a working lavender distillery. In the evening, there will be a special treat with a wine maker and cheese expert. You will go first in the vineyard to learn the secrets of organic wine growing.

Then you will gather around a table set amid a breathtaking view on the vineyards and the Mont Ventoux further. It's time to also improve your knowledge of French cheeses wine pairing while enjoying a must of France gastronomy. Overnight at La Villa des Dentelles.

Day 7: Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Avignon (Loop walk, f miles, easy to moderate, 300 feet elevation gain and loss)

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Châteauneuf-du-Pape world's well known village and especially wines. Literally translating as the “new castle of the pope," this was the site of the pope's summer retreat when the seat of the papacy was moved to Avignon from Rome in the 14th century. From the hilltop town, views extend over the Rhône Valley, the thousands of acres of vines originally brought here during the papal period, Avignon, and Mont Ventoux.

Your walk is on undulating farming tracks used only by the locals to work the surrounding vineyards, and trails linking two estates, each with a different character. You will make your way to one of the 55 producers of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, where you stop for a tour and tasting to learn more about its cultivation and classification.

You will have your lunch in the village. There will be an afternoon walk in Avignon historic quarter to finish by the immense Papal Palace and legendary Pont d'Avignon, originally built at the 12th century. Farewell dinner will be at Le Phebus Michelin-star restaurant in Joucas. Overnight at La Villa des Dentelles.

Day 8: Departure from Beaumes de Venise

After breakfast, the trip comes to a close with a drive over 45 minutes to Avignon, where you can continue your explorations in Provence or depart for another destination.

Walking physical level

Easy

You enjoy walking as a means to get fresh air and see the countryside, without considering yourself as a real hiker. You like to walk to get exercise on your holidays, and enjoy strolls in the countryside and discover Provence in a different and fun way. Walks are generally under three hours per day on easy terrain, with some climbing up to perched villages.

Moderate

You enjoy regular exercise (whether walking, cycling, aerobics, etc.). You're in good shape, used to regular and sustained exercise. You are keen to set off on all-day walks, and can handle walking uphill slowly for up to two hours at a time. Walks are generally under five hours per day, on various types of terrain which are not technically difficult.

Corinne Preteur
Corinne is a self-trained cook. Starting to cook since in her young age with her mother before learning methods with chefs and improving her skills with Michelin-star chefs in France and abroad. As a member of the French Library in Boston she has the chance to meet Julia Child. She also created food and wine festivals celebrating the French cuisine in Boston. Corinne has been running cooking and baking classes in France for 15 years.
