Join this short break for a rural immersion cooking tour starting in Marrakech and taking you into the Berber villages of the High Atlas mountains and valleys. In Morocco, the connection local Berber people have with their animals, their knowledge of correct care, and when and how to process them for the table is still very much alive and part of the culture. During the tour, you will be staying at two different accommodations. One is a four-star riad in Marrakech, Medina and the other is in a traditional mountain lodge located in Aremd.
One of Lets Go 2 Morocco's team members will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your accommodation in the old Medina; the thousand year city contained within 19 kilometers of adobe walls. Depending on your arrival time, an activity will be scheduled according to the available time. This will be discussed once your flight time is confirmed.
After breakfast, you will leave the city and drive towards the High Atlas Mountains that dominate the southern skyline. This is the heart of traditional Amazigh or Berber communities and where the fruits, nuts, vegetables, and herbs are grown. On your way, you will be stopping to discover a weekly local market or souk.
Asni is at the crossroads of many villages and here, you will find a vast array of fresh produce among other things. You will visit a bakery and see how the locals prepare and cook many different dishes. You will then do your shopping for the cooking class that will take place in a local house in a small village at the top of the valley.
The drive up is along terraced mountainsides that are full of almond, cherry, apple, and walnut trees. Once you reach Imlil; the village at the head of the valley, you will take a short walk with the assistance of a mule, to carry the shopping, to the village of Mzik, where the cooking class will take place at the house of Mohamed.
You will be met with the welcome mint tea ceremony after which you will help to prepare a three course meal. In the afternoon after you have eaten, you will walk up to the next village to your lodge in Aremd where dinner will be in your accommodation.
After breakfast, you will pack up and drive over the mountains to the valley of Ourika. This is a fertile verdant valley with many gardens, and you will visit some of them; a saffron garden and a herb garden as well as an argan oil cooperative, perhaps a pottery and perhaps another cooperative where they make apple cider vinegar.
As everything is seasonal, it will depend what is in season as to what you are able to visit. After lunch, you will return to Marrakech where you will have a special tour of the spice and olive souk, learn about Marrakech´s famous Tanjia and visit other places of interest on a guided foodie tour with dinner. You will spend the night in a riad in the Medina.
The tour will start in Marrakech, and take you up into the verdant valleys of the High Atlas and return you to Marrakech.
The price of the package includes all meals. The food will be local traditional dishes of couscous, tagines, and salads with fresh seasonal produce, locally grown. During the tour, you will have the amazing opportunity to learn how to cook the traditional Moroccan foods using local ingredients that you will be in the local market.
Spa treatments may be organized for you as an extra if you wish.
