Ana Garcia is one of the most vivacious traditional Mexican chefs and teachers in Mexico today. The inspiration for Chef Ana’s recipes and hospitality grow out of her long, rich family history in central and northern Mexico. She has taken this extensive knowledge and incorporated it into a culinary repertoire that includes traditional central and northern Mexican specialties, as well as nouvelle Mexican cuisine using traditional ingredients in new and gastronomically adventurous ways.
Puerto Escondido is really one of the great “undiscovered” beach towns in Mexico earning distinction by the New York Times as one of the “places to go” in 2017. Located on the Pacific coast in the state of Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido is known for its fishing and laid-back surfer environment.
It has numerous famous surf beaches where you can take a lesson or just sit in your palapa and watch the waves come in on beaches such as Carrizalillo, Zicatela, and Punta Zicatela. Puerto Escondido hosts numerous international surf competitions throughout the year like the ESPN X Games and the MexPipe Challenge.
Puerto Escondido was actually first named “Bahia de la Escondida” or “Bay of the Hidden Woman” because it got its name from a Mixtec woman who was captured by the feared pirate, Andres Drake (brother of Sir Francis Drake).
Drake used the bay to hide, rest, and anchor his ship. As legend has it, he captured the Mixtec woman in Huatulco and kept her in a cabin onboard. The local woman escaped her capturers and dove into the bay. She swam to shore and hid in the jungles.
Drake sent a party to find her but never did. Even later, Drake would return to look for her but never found her. Bahia de la Escondida eventually became Puerto Escondido.
Puerto Escondido is also known for its diverse wildlife with freshwater lagoons in the town of Manialtepec where there is a variety of animal life. The lagoon is full of mangroves with a variety of birds such as pelicans, seagulls, ibis, storks, cranes, jacanas, buzzards, kingfishers, and swans along with a variety of animals such as raccoons, weasels, deer, wild boar, foxes, and crocodiles.

Please book your flight to arrive at Puerto Escondido Airport (PXM). Transfer from and to the airport is included. La Villa Bonita Culinary Vacations will pick you up from the airport.
There are no international flights into the Puerto Escondido Airport (PXM) but there are five flights daily on Fridays from Mexico City Benito Juarez Airport (MEX). This is a short 45-minute flight on VivaAerobus, Interjet, or Aeromar.
Therefore, you will need to have two separate tickets – one round trip to Mexico City (MEX) and another round trip ticket (MEX-PXM). Please note that VivaAerobus does not post their flights to make a reservation until about 7 months ahead of time.
Please give yourself enough time to make your Mexico City connection as you will need to go through immigration, pick up luggage, go through customs, and then recheck luggage in the public part of the terminal.
La Villa Bonita suggests three hours if you have checked luggage. If you travel with carry-on luggage only, you can fly through very quickly since you can download your boarding pass to your phone or print it out prior to your trip.
Many guests opt to spend one night in Mexico City on Thursday night and then fly out on the first flight Friday morning to PXM.
Airport pickup and return are provided to the Puerto Escondido Airport (PXM). You can arrive at any time and La Villa Bonita will pick you up. The airport is tiny so there are no instructions to find La Villa Bonita's staff members other than providing La Villa Bonita with a picture of yourself through Whatsapp and they will find you.
The trip to the house takes about 25 minutes. The only scheduled event on Friday is dinner in the evening. Classes will start on Saturday. For departure, choose the flight that best fits your connection in MEX and La Villa Bonita will get you there on time.
Your return the following Friday will be easier as there are morning flights to get you to your connecting flight in MEX. If you need any assistance in selection flights, please contact La Villa Bonita and they will be happy to help you select the best option.
One other option for arrival is utilizing the Huatulco Airport (HUX). This airport has some international flights and is about 1 hour and 45 minutes away from the house. La Villa Bonita cannot pick you up at this airport but you can obtain an airport car service for about 90 USD each way to pick you up and return you to the airport.
