  • Rita Lucherini

During Rita's informative years, she gradually immersed herself in the culture, customs, and traditions of her parents and grandparents, and, in particular, their culinary cultures. Rita studied the ancient secrets and techniques of the traditional Tuscan cooking and kept alive certain recipes that lost. She has been in Barga for almost 30 years running her bed and breakfast apartments together with her children, and she has now opened her cooking school.

This retreat will take place in and around the region of Tuscany, Italy.

Barga

At the border of the Garfagnana region, Barga has been recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and has gained recognition by both the Bandiera Aranicone Touring Club (Orange flag touring club), and by the Citt Slow (Slow city) movement. The adopted home of Giovanni Pascoli, Barga, is a medieval village of rare beauty; from its Duomo, to the ancient aqueduct and the museum, which was once home to Giovanni Pascoli.

Castelnuovo Garfagnana

As a medieval center besides the Serchio river, Castelnuovo di Garfagnana historical heart is encircled by a big ancient fortress. It is rich in local artisans and restorers, and it is a place where you can taste the true traditional dishes of Garfagnana. Not to be missed is the path of Ariosto: a beautiful walk leading to the Fortezza di Montalfonso, where views are spectacular.

Lucca

The large circular wall which borders the town is still accessible today. You can walk or cycle there. Once inside the walls, you can visit innumerable churches, surrounded by piazzas, courts, medieval towers, buildings and gardens. Among them is La Cattedrale di San Martino, which is particularly worth a visit. At the heart of the town is via Fillungo, offering numerous shops and small boutiques, rich with typical produce from the area: il buccellato (a sweet Tuscan bread), cured meats, and honey. Finally, theres the Piazza dellAnfiteatro, a famous circular piazza that in ancient times was a marketplace.

Pisa

Pisa is famous all over the world for its Leaning Tower, as well as for the magnificent Piazza dei Miracoli.

"I can wholeheartedly recommend La Mezzaluna as a fantastic, fun experience. Rita is an amazing hostess and really gave 5-star service. We crammed so much into the three days with a variety of activities from sightseeing, eating and drinking to cooking; certainly a good balance for everyone. The accommodation was spacious and clean and did not incur any single supplements. I would like to thank Rita and the family for looking after me so well as this was my first trip as a single traveler and I would certainly love to return."

"My experience at La Mezzaluna was nothing short of amazing! I cook and host events for an organic farm in Western New York and wanted to focus more on cooking than sightseeing during my visit. Rita made sure that we did just that! She is a master teacher in the kitchen, where we conjured up such delicacies as torta della nona, eight different kinds of pasta, spaghetti alle vongole, gnocchi di palate and many, many more dishes. Rita and Alex (her partner) are the perfect pair. Kind, generous, and funny! I visited Alex's vineria for prosecco and wine tastings and to sample local cheeses and meats. Friends come to hang out during the day and it was wonderful to experience everyday life with Rita and Alex. Rita was an excellent hostess, sharing stories of the local history and of her childhood, when we visited local gems such as the Cave of the Winds (not to be missed), a biodynamic winery, and local farms. My accommodations were a quaint apartment with a kitchenette and beautiful views of the surrounding valleys. I cannot wait to return to visit my Italian family! Thank you for everything, Rita!"

"My family of 5 was greeted by Rita, who was a perfect hostess!! We started our day with a tour around the kitchen and then went off to her partner's wine shop and had some tasting and meat and cheese platter before our cooking began. WOW! We made pizza, tiramisu, focaccia bread, traditional ragu sauce, pomodoro sauce. My 15 year old son said that this was his favorite day of our 10-days vacation in Italy!"

"Rita was so very generous and she charges very reasonable price for a perfect day!"

  • Review by a traveler from Portland, USA

"My wife and I had a wonderful afternoon cooking class at La Mezza Luna with Rita. It far exceeded our expectations. We were instructed in hands-on preparation of bruschetta, farro soup, 4 freshly made pastas and sauces (ravioli in butter & sage sauce, tagliatelle with ragu, flat Tuscan maccheroni with salsiccia sauce, and spaghetti pomodoro), and tiramisu. Then we had a feast, with Rita providing great wines. She's a wonderful teacher and chef with a great sense of humor and a Scottish accent - not so strange for an Italian living in the Barga area. An educational experience and a great value! Can't wait to show off our new recipes with friends back home!"

"Just spent a week here with 10 family members it's my 7th the visit. Warm welcome from Rita and Alex and great food and wine, the cook school is a must, did this back in April and loved it. Great base to see more of Italy, easy by car or train, this time packed in Lucca, Pisa, Barga, Sommocolonia, San Pelligrino in Alps, San Gimignano, Carerra Mountains, did some wine tasting in Alex Winery - Vineria "per Bacco", enjoyed the chestnut festival in Mologno."

  • Review by a traveler from England

"Staff at La Mezzaluna are very helpful, sorted us out with timetables etc. Rooms are everything you need. Within walking distance to the train station which is fab, even though there arent frequent trains from Barga there still are various chances to get to Pisa, Florence and Lucca. La Mezza Luna has the most fantastic view!! Although it is outside of Barga it isn't far in a taxi, if you are looking at having a stop off this place is fab."
