This hiking and cooking vacation will take place in Dolomites region, Italy. This odd, boot shaped peninsula is immediately recognizable. Surrounded by water, this narrow peninsula is only 150 miles across at its widest point. With the Alps across the north, and the Apennines Mountains extending down the middle along the length of the peninsula, you find vast changes in terrain across a very short distance. You can drive from the flat river deltas of the Adriatic coast to the majestic peaks of the Dolomites in a few short hours and a fantastic destination for active tours. These rapid changes in terrain create a multitude of micro climates.

During you food and hike holiday, you will enjoy daily tasty breakfast, refreshing snacks during your hiking tours, and three savory dinners. Your dinners will be perfectly completed with wine. You private wine tastings will delight your palate with undiscovered local wines. Traditional Italian flavors are an important part of this vacation.

Exploring the traditional cuisine of the regions you visit, from the mountain cuisine of the Dolomites with its decidedly Austrian influences to the seafood based dishes of Venice with spices obtained from its trading partner, the Byzantines, is not only a well-earned way to refuel after a day of hiking. It also offers a unique window into the history and geography of the region. From the unexpected appearance of poppy seeds in a local ravioli dish to the difference between speck and prosciutto, the goal is to introduce you to the incredible diversity of the regional cuisines and local wines you will experience first-hand each and every day of your adventure.

The history of civilization on the Italian peninsula is ancient, and wine production has been ongoing here for over 4000 years. Throughout this history, even to modern times, wines were produced from the grapes that were grown in your own backyard. As your backyard might have a different micro climate than the next estate over, you might well be growing a different type of grape than your neighbor. The result, over thousands of years, is now over 1000 different varietals are grown in this small country. So prepare yourself for an amazing number of grape varietals.
