The philosophy

Il Palagio in Panzano in Chianti is a small family-owned wine estate. The philosophy merges values like family and tradition with their love for nature, human relationships, and customer satisfaction as well as the comfort and well-being of their guests. Their care and effort are continuously aiming to preserve the natural setting and achieve uncompromising wine quality while maintaining the fullest respect for man and nature.

This is the soundest method for restoring to wine its peculiarity and its sensory relation to its terroir. These values were learned from their grandparents. Furthermore, quality is another reason why they decided to change to organic production; quality is important for us because it ensures the viability of their business and the satisfaction of their customers.

The Conca d'Oro in Panzano in Chianti

Il Palagio is an estate of approximately 13 hectares: about 3 hectares are occupied by olive trees, 7.5 hectares are occupied by vineyards and the rest by wood. The vineyards are located in the so-called Conca d'Oro (Golden basin) of Panzano, a privileged area of its perfect altitude of 400-500 meters, the minimum temperature variation as well as the morphology and the composition of the soil which is rich in clay and marl.

Bio-organic production and certification

In 2009, they turned their business into an organic production and will receive the official certification in 2013. They cultivate their vineyards according to the biological methods preserving the integrity, the richness and vitality of their ground and ensuring you the highest wine quality. The wines results from an accurate work and careful selection of the grapes and are immediately recognized as alive and natural. All this reflects their philosophy, values, and mission. They believe in wines that reflect their region, whether through the grape variety or through land.

From the vineyard to the wine cellar

The wine cellar is used for winemaking, as well as for bottling and storing. Since 2009, they are using medium-size French oak barrels for their wines Chianti - Classico Il Palagio and Chianti Classico Riserva. Il Palagio are using 400-liter French oak barrels for their wine, Torgentile. Winemaking occurs in thermo-conditioned stainless vat. For their wines, they use grapes only from their vineyards, where they make a careful selection. Marco Chellini, agronomist and enologist, supports the process of winemaking in the wine cellar.

Award winning wines

In 2007, Il Palagio launched its products on the market for the first time. In 2010, the famous guide to Italian wine, titled Vini d'Italia and published from the Italian food and wine magazine and publishing group Gambero Rosso, awarded their wine, Chianti Classico Il Palagio with the highest rating: three glasses.

Il Palagio is located in Panzano in Chianti, in the heart of Tuscany, exactly halfway between Florence and Siena (approximately 30 kilometers). Immersed in its natural settings made of vineyards and olive groves, the estate offers lovely and comfortable apartments, large gardens, a swimming pool, barbecue as well as a wonderful view of the Tuscan countryside.

Already in the 1980s the first English tourists came to the farmhouse for holiday. In the 1990s it has been renovated without modifying its rural retreat but maintaining the original style (stone walls, ceilings with wooden beams). Even the furniture is antique, and it is nice to see how the rustic Tuscan style combines with the functionality and comfort. This is the perfect place for those looking for peace, rest and a quiet place to stay.

"My wife and I were looking for the right place for a large family gathering in Italy next year. Il Palagio was recommended by an agent we know in Canada. A one week visit this past month where we rented one of the 5 suites convinced us that this was the right place to book the entire villa next year for our extended family and group of friends. The place sleeps 24! Amazing vistas, beautifully restored, luscious garden and pool beside an operating winery with a 15-minute walk to Panzano. What more could anyone want. Monia Piccini, the owner is fantastic."

"We stayed at the villa for a week for our 45th wedding anniversary and it was wonderfully relaxing after 3 previous weeks of travel. The villa is a step back in time, an authentic old Italian setting with comfortably appointed furnishings. The apt was spacious and well equipped and the view from our balcony in the Belvedere apartment was breathtaking. Monia was a gracious hostess, very helpful in providing local information and educating us on the vineyard, olive oil and wine making. The walk into Panzano an old Etruscan town only 10 minutes. Thank you Monia, it exceeded our expectations."

"We stayed here for 5 days in mid-October for our honeymoon. It was exactly what I imagined a Tuscan stay to be. Rooms were clean, grounds and garden were beautiful. We even cooked a meal using garden ingredients! Amazing. Close to the town and many other towns. Gioia and Monia were perfect hosts. Thank you for having us."

"Paradiso sulla terra! (A paradise on earth). At the heart of Chianti countryside, a glorious organic agriturismo with a view which will be imprinted on my mind forever -- from the hillsides over a checked cloth of crops ... a spellbinding view, a cachet, an attitude to wine, life and the earth. Thanks to the wonder woman winemaker Monia Piccini Guaraducci and her husband, and their fantastic farmstay and winery. I set out on this trip to discover the flourishing organic underbelly to Chianti. My research led me here. A stay at Il Palagio is one in the lap of the most beautiful Chianti countryside of Panzano in Chianti, hugged in among the slopes of vines, pavings of terracotta, shimmering blue pool, and flourishing fruits, vegetables and herbs in the garden.Monia is a star in trying to put her region on the map for for quality organic Chianti Classico as well as for other produce.Shes achieving that by marketing the wines and produce through her high-end agriturismo. The place has style at the same time as being natural. The self-contained accommodation is airy, bucolic, 'Country Style', rustic-chic with great beds, and gorgeous private courtyards. The organic message is swallowed quickly along with the setting, and a couple of glasses of the incredible drop they produce. Perfectly located for day tripping south to Siena, or north to Florence and to every village and dot of Chianti countryside all around - the daily markets, the wine routes, the castles, churches and other history. A place I've been dreaming of returning to ever since .. ideally to live. Yes one of those places.Stayed February 2015, travelled with family"

"My husband and I wandered into the tasting room in the town of Panzano and enjoyed a free tasting of wines while sitting at a table overlooking the Tuscan hills. The view was amazing, the service was wonderful and the wine was lovely (we bought wine before we left). Highly recommend if you're passing through the little town of Panzano."

"Set among vineyards and olive groves this is a lovely spot with great views and excellent amenities. The pool is awesome and gardens are well tended. The team led by Monia keep the place moving and they offer help and advice on local restaurants and trips. It is next to the working winery and the wines are good too! WiFi a bit sporadic during our trip but we were on holiday! Our apartment was the sleep-2 Piccolo which means small and indeed it was with little private outdoor spaces or views that other apartments have so beware if you need the space etc. It did not detract from our stay at all, although travellers should be aware. It would be ideal for accompanying teenagers."

"Monia, the estate proprietor, took me, my husband, and my sister-in-law on an incredible hour long wine tour of her family estate. We spent four days in Tuscany and looking through our pictures, the best panoramic shots, by far, were ones we haphazardly took from Villa Il Palagio. We did not stay at the villa, although we wish we had!We emailed a week in advance to schedule a wine tour as I had read it is a family run, biodynamic, and organic winery. We were not disappointed! We were welcomed with smiles, toured around the winery, given a generous tasting and beautiful wines and olive oil, and then spent a good 30 minutes taking in the views. We bought some of our favorite wines and even a reserve bottle to open next year on our anniversary. The care Monia and her husband take for the land is truly inspiring. She repeated many times, "first we are grape growers, not wine makers." It was very cool to hear the community involvement of all of the grape growers in this valley and how much love they put into cultivating their grapes. As if this weren't reason enough to buy their wine, but in addition it is phenomenal! The villa is a bit hard to find, so we stopped into the wine store front in the town in Panzano to ask for directions, which was not a problem. Definitely recommended!"
