GrapeHops invites you to experience a tour in which you will eat and drink your way through some of Sicily’s landscapes with a small group of like-minded travelers. In the tour, you will experience guided city walk in Palermo and explore its wine bar scene. You will also discover the enchanting towns and villages of Scopello, Erice, Marsala, Trapani, Cefalu, and Castelbuono. The journey will end on the slope of Mount Etna where you’ll stay in a rural accommodation looking out to the sea.
During this tour, you will stay in Palermo for two nights, in Baglia Donna Franca for three nights, two nights in Cefalu and Castelbuono, and three nights on the slope of Mount Etna.
The lodgings are, for the most part, comfortable, clean and basic. Hotels and pensiones will have private rooms with bathrooms. There is no single supplement on a GrapeHops Tour. You will have your own bedroom with no additional expense added to the published prices.
Your first two nights are spent in the city of Palermo, where you will have a guided city walk and explore the vibrant wine bar scene. You will see the famous mosaics in the church at Monreale, visit the enchanting seaside village of Scopello, and the Greek ruins of Segesta. You will also explore the medieval hill town Erice and the important ancient trading hubs of Marsala and Trapani while based for three nights in the winery accommodations of Baglia Donna Franca.
Next, you will make your way to the northern part of the island, where you will stay two nights to explore Cefalu and Castelbuono, tour and taste at a Slow Food cheese maker’s farm, and visit some of the area villages for a taste of their local specialties.
The final three nights will be spent in rural accommodation on the slope of Mount Etna, looking out to the sea. You will taste at several Mount Etna wineries, visit local bakeries, and other food purveyors to taste many Sicilian delicacies, and learn to make some of them yourself.
At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off in the city of Catania at the train station, airport, or hotel to continue the rest of your journey.
This tour will take place in several cities in Sicily, Italy. Sicily has been occupied or settled by many different cultures over many centuries, and this history has shaped the island’s food traditions. Besides pasta, you’ll find couscous; besides the red and white wines you’ll find produced all over Europe, you will find the fortified wine of Marsala. Important throughout history for salt and wheat production, today Sicily is one of the most compelling foodie destinations in the world.
You will be served 10 breakfasts, 8 lunches, 8 dinners. The meals are fun, convivial, lots of food, and lots of laughter. Generally speaking, don’t expect haute cuisine in a quiet room. Expect lots of courses of tasty local foods accompanied by plenty of beverages.
