We booked two day tours through our hotel and enjoyed both days- tiring but better than trying to do it all ourselves. Pompeii and Vesuvius was good with Anna our guide- very knowledgable and showed us places we would not have seen on our own and no worries about getting lost. Had to be fit to walk up Vesuvius but worth the view. Meal out of down was basic but ok and less pricey than by Pompeii. Amalfi coast trip with Serena- lovely views and we thought the boat trip was worth it at €12. Amalfi very commercialised but we liked Ravello with visit to church. Lunch in Scala was good value- lovely fish and great views at Scala. Yes it is cheaper to do it yourself but this takes all the stress out of it and see things probably would miss on your own. Great drivers too.
What an incredible day!!! We booked the tour through our hotel. Anna was our guide. I think the name of the driver was Genaro. The driver was amazing. He was so calm driving and did an incredible job. Anna was really good and made us feel comfortable. The whole day was amazing!!! Such an unforgettable experience!!

We had wanted to see Herculaneum during our last week on the Amalfi coast but weren't sure how to go about it. We heard from friends and family that we could just go there by bus (we definitely did not rent a car during this trip--we're not suicidal!). A quick internet search brought us to Golden Tours out of Sorrento, and their only half day trip to Herculaneum was in 2 days. We booked it, our hotel in Sorrento and took the ferry from Amalfi to take our last trip before we leave Italy. Despite the late start (not by Italian time, of course) we left Sorrento and arrived in Herculaneum in a little over an hour. Sonia, our tour guide, gave us the background info on Herculaneum and the history of the area while on the bus. She was able to keep our group of 39 together, despite various levels of physical ability. She monitored the location of other groups at the site and sent us in the opposite direction, Our "whisperers" were helpful in keeping us informed of the important details she was describing as well as her location when we got lost in thought infront of some incredible fresco. We had never taken a Golden Tour but will definitely plan on doing another.
