Accommodation

You’ll be staying at a proper castle with a moat and several turrets. The home of the Hawkes family dates back to the 1700s and you’ll learn from madame and monsieur precisely what it’s like to live in a vrai French castle.

Program

During your stay, you’ll explore the chateau's potager vegetable garden, pick flowers from their extensive flower gardens, and follow monsieur’s tutorial on how to set the table and arrange the kind of flower displays that will suit a chateau.

Needless to say, you’ll be heading to Beaune and Chablis for wine tastings, you’ll visit a stunning walled medieval town, go to the local market and learn from and taste with local cheese producers. You shall picnic by the famous Burgundian canals and end your stay at a five-star hotel and spa, with a treatment included.

Itinerary

Day 1, September 8, Wednesday

Arrive at the chateau via train from Paris. Meet your chateau hosts and learn about the history of the chateau with welcome cocktails and gougères (typical Burgundian savory cheese pastry). You’ll head out to a local French Gourmet meal and discuss the week to come.

Day 2, September 9, Thursday

Today you’ll go to the local market and buy goods for your picnic lunch. Sound fun? After the market visit, you’ll venture out to explore the Burgundy canal where you’ll have a chance to ride bikes and enjoy a picnic, canal side.

This afternoon, back at the chateau, you’ll enjoy a potager trip (the vegetable garden) and participate in a short cooking class where you’ll learn some of the secrets to Burgundian cuisine. You’ll head back outside to walk through the flower gardens, picking as you go with the master of the chateau.

This will be followed by a short flower arranging class as well as instruction on how he prefers to set the table to represent both the French and English styles. The owners are in fact English. Tonight you’ll enjoy the fruits of our labors with a sumptuous and typical Burgundian meal with local wines dining in the chateau’s grand dining room.

Day 3, September 10, Friday

Bright and early today you’ll head north towards Beaune. Here you’ll explore the gorgeous Hospices de Beaune and then you’ll delight in a wine-tasting with lunch at a local winery.

This afternoon you’ll explore a famous mustard factory and then enjoy a pastry tasting with an award-winning pastry chef.

You’ll have a light meal tonight before retiring back to your very own castle for the night dreaming of counts and princesses from the days of yore.

Day 4, September 11, Saturday

Today you’ll have a chance to explore the local environs. You’ll take a trail walk to visit some local producers and if time allows you’ll visit the Chateau de Mont Saint Jean. You’ll have lunch at the chateau, outside if the weather allows.

In the afternoon, you’ll visit the Medieval town of Semur-en-Auxois where you will trip the old chateau and then head back to the chateau to enjoy a game of croquet and a glass of kir.

Tonight, you’ll dine nearby the chateau in a small medieval village where the Girls Guide to Paris team found a chef who specializes in hyper-local market-driven ingredients.

Day 5, September 12, Sunday

This morning, you’ll head out to visit the small quaint village where Johnny Depp’s Chocolat was filmed. Then you’ll visit a historic abbey founded in the 12th century complete with formal gardens.

You’ll take a little break today from French food and feast on Vietnamese for your dejeuner today. Then you’ll head to the storied village of Chablis with its centuries-old producers. You’ll have a tasting lesson with multiple local Chablis wines in order to discern which you prefer.

On the way back to the chateau, you’ll stop at a lovely Auberge for dinner.

Day 6, September 13, Monday

On your last day, you’ll head to the nearby village of Saulieu to relax and be pampered at their award-winning spa by Bernard Loiseau. You shall lunch in style at their 2 Michelin star restaurant.

This afternoon will be free for lazing about the chateau, taking walks, or reading books overlooking the beautiful Serein Valley.

Tonight you’ll enjoy a final elegant wine tasting with a selection of French tapas. You will toast to new friendships and memories which shall last a lifetime.

Day 7, September 14, Tuesday

This is the end of your culinary vacation in Burgundy. You will return home with beautiful memories of your trip.
