You will stay in a small three-star village hotel. During your free time, you will have the chance to walk around the area and visit nearby villages or follow tracks in nature, if you wish.

If you wish to book alone, you can share with another participant, provided that another participant has selected the shared accommodation option as well. If there are no other participants that have selected the shared accommodation option, then you will have to go for single accommodation. Alternatively, reimbursement is also possible if you do not want this option. Please send your inquiry for further information.

What is foraging?

Foraging is the search for wild food. Although it has seen a revival around the world in recent years, foraging has been commonplace throughout the history of Crete, including in recent times. Through drives and walks around the island, on the day 3 of this vacation, you will embark on a group culinary adventure full of flavors, scents, and imagery.

Sample daily itinerary

Day 1

  • Pick up from Heraklion Archaeological Museum at 5 p.m.
  • Dinner in a local village's kafeneion
  • Stay: Gerakari

Day 2

  • Cooking with a local in a village house: learn how to prepare authentic Cretan recipes
  • Dinner in a local village taverna
  • Stay: Gerakari

Day 3

  • Foraging in Amari: the wild taste of Crete - delicacies from nature
  • Dinner in a local village taverna
  • Stay: Gerakari

Day 4

  • Traditional bread making and cheesemaking with a shepherd
  • Dinner in a downtown eatery in Heraklion
  • Stay: Heraklion

Day 5

  • Wine tasting tour: taste local wine made from heritage grape varieties
  • Drop off at Heraklion Archaeological Museum at 2 p.m.

Location

Your base will be the village of Gerakari, situated at the foothills of Mount Kedros, surrounded by the stunning nature of the Amari valley, in the heart of Crete. This is a region of unspoilt beauty, with several authentic villages nearby.

How to get there

Recommended Airports

Arrival by airplane

Heraklion International Airport (HER)

Please book your flight to arrive at Heraklion International Airport (HER). This airport is not far from the the meeting point (Archaeological Museum of Heraklion at the city center). You can take the bus from the airport that drops you just outside the Archeological Museum.

All city buses leaving from the airport will drop you there. The ticket is 1.20 EUR and you can buy it at a kiosk next to the bus stop outside the airport. Please ask the driver to let you know when you are at the museum. Alternatively, you can take a taxi to the city, which will cost approximately 10-15 EUR.

Chania International Airport ("Ioannis Daskalogiannis") (CHQ)

Another option is to book your flight to arrive at Chania International Airport ("Ioannis Daskalogiannis") (CHQ). This airport is 145 kilometers from the meeting point.

To get to the meeting point, you will need to take a bus from the Chania airport to Chania city bus station and then change to another bus from Chania to Heraklion bus station. The total trip will take approximately 3.5 hours and will cost 18 EUR. The meeting point (Archaeological Museum of Heraklion at the city center) is a 10-minute walk from Heraklion bus station.

Forage Crete do not provide transfer from Heraklion airport, but they can provide transfer from Chania airport to the program venue upon request for an additional 75 EUR per person.

Pick up is from the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion at 5 p.m. on Friday. Drop off is at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

Cancellation Policy

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 25% of the total price.
  • The deposit is non-refundable, if the booking is cancelled.
  • The rest of the payment should be paid on arrival.
