Surya Shanti - Sidemen

Surya Shanti is an intimate boutique hideaway in the hills of Eastern Bali that combines comfort and style with an authentically Balinese experience. The 10 cozy, stylish villas are tucked into a valley surrounded by emerald rice paddies and mist-shrouded volcanic peaks, each with charming four-poster beds, simple yet bright décor, and thatched-style roofs.

The small spa overlooking the river offers a good range of treatments and the open-style library, bar, and infinity pool are all very pleasant places to stay and marvel at the stunning natural vistas. The views from each villa and almost every part of the resort are absolutely spectacular and the staff is lovely, whether serving up your afternoon tea on the terrace or taking you on a complimentary trek across the paddy fields.

With a range of other activities on offer, such as rafting, cooking classes, boat rides, and even shopping in Ubud, this lovely hotel is perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Bali’s main tourist areas, with relaxation, unique excursions, and rural charm all in equal measure.

Wapa di Ume - Ubud

Wapa di Ume is a great value option for those looking to easily explore Ubud but also want to be surrounded by picturesque paddy fields. Great for families and couples alike, it provides guests with a good level of comfort and style while maintaining an authentic Balinese charm.

The 18 light and open rooms are spread amongst working paddy fields and, despite being modern in style, they fit in with their surroundings. The bathrooms are a good size and have all the necessary modern amenities. The sleeping area is simply furnished, they have no televisions, but are very comfortable and welcoming. The two bedroom pool villas are great for families, while the standard rooms are simple but offer great value.

The service is friendly and helpful and the Indonesian menu is a good standard. The hotel is five minutes from the heart of Ubud and the free shuttle service makes it very easy to get out and explore the cultural hub of Bali.

Anyone looking to relax in the hotel will do so in a beautiful setting, with a beautiful split level green pool providing great views, even if it is not particularly large. There is also a good spa, yoga center, and in-house cookery courses.

Day 1 - Southern Bali

Arrive in Bali, where you will be met by your guide and driver and transferred to your hotel.

Day 2 - Southern Bali

Spend the morning learning how to create a range of delicious Balinese dishes under the expert tutelage of Heinz von Holzen, a 20-year resident of Bali and a pioneer of Balinese cookery courses at Bumbu Bali.

Day 3 - Ubud

Transfer from your hotel to Ubud, the cultural center of Bali. The rest of the day will be at leisure.

Day 4 - Ubud

Take part in a cooking class at Wapa Di Ume. Begin with a visit to the local market, where the staff will help with the banter and the bartering. Returning to Wapa Di Ume’s traditional open-air Balinese kitchen, spend the morning learning how to cook a range of traditional dishes with an expert chef, before savoring your efforts for lunch.

Day 5 - Ubud

Enjoy a comprehensive tour of Ubud, including a visit to the excellent ARMA Museum’s extensive art collection. You will also spend a little time with Dewa Nyoman Batuan, a master of Balinese painting, before moving on to enjoy the delights of the city’s famous Monkey Forest, home to hundreds of crab-eating macaques and the Puri Saren Agung Palace.

Day 6 - Ubud

In the morning, you will take a private walking tour through the beautiful countryside around Ubud in the company of a local Balinese priest. Touring through the villages and rice fields, you will enjoy a very personal and illuminating insight into Balinese culture, religion, and nature, before a traditional lunch and a Balinese blessing back at the priest’s house.

Day 7 - Sidemen

Transfer from Ubud to the beautiful, rural countryside town of Sidemen. The rest of the day will be at leisure for you to explore the area.

Day 8 - Sidemen

Take part in a cooking class at the lovely Surya Shanti Villa, where you will buy fresh ingredients from a local market before gaining some firsthand knowledge of the ingredients required in traditional Balinese and Indonesian cooking.

Day 9 - Sidemen

Today is at leisure for you to explore the beautiful countryside surrounding Sidemen.

Day 10 - Candidasa beach

Transfer from Sidemen to the seaside town of Candidasa.

Day 11 - Candidasa beach

You will spend today at leisure relaxing by the pool or the sea.

Day 12 - Candidasa beach

Today, you will visit a local village and learn the different techniques they use to cook traditional countryside dishes.

Day 13 - Departure

Transfer to Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) to catch your flight home.

Settled in the foothills of the volcanic mountains of northern Bali, Ubud provides a wonderful contrast to the lively and modern south coast of Bali. Surrounded by paddy fields and dramatic valleys, the old town is often considered to be the cultural hub of the island. Particularly famous for its markets, temples, great selection of restaurants, and its traditional Balinese architecture, Ubud town is a great place for private exploration. It is particularly good for families and young couples wanting to be in the heart of the action.

During this trip, you will learn about traditional Balinese cooking. You will take several cooking classes and learn about the ingredients typically used in this island's food.
