Casa Tolentino is an ancient monastery of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino dating back to the 17th century. This small boutique hotel with just 13 rooms is located in one of the main streets of the city, at the foot of the hill of San Martino and next to the "Quartieri Spagnoli" (Spanish District).
The terrace of Casa Tolentino is one of the finest spots in the city to admire the beauty of the Gulf of Naples. The hotel is centrally located with just a five-minute walk to the Funicolare Centrale - connections with Via Toledo, old town, and Piazza Fuga Vomero. The decor is in perfect harmony with the convent, minimalist but with all comforts. Your partial or total sea view room has Wi-Fi, TV, mini-bar, heating, and private en-suite bathroom.
Since 2010 the beautiful garden has been classified as an “Asset of Historic and Artistic Interest” and National Monument by the Ministry of Cultural Assets and Activities with five thousand square meters of greenery for you to enjoy. The management and hospitality services of the structure are entrusted to the keen young people of a social co-operative, with the aim of enhancing the area and creating employment.
The hands-on course covers traditional, Neapolitan recipes, the wonderfully intense flavors of traditional Neapolitan dishes in a private historic dwelling located on Posillipo Hill, one of the most beautiful districts of the city close to the sea, to get in touch with a typical Neapolitan upper class family. The class is held in a friendly atmosphere and warm, seasoned with an ingredient that makes Neapolitan people, unique: the art of conviviality. You’ll discover that for Neapolitan people a foreign is a guest never a tourist.
You’ll have a chance to know some secrets of the cuisine and and immerse in the Neapolitan energy. Cook and eat dishes prepared using fresh, natural and organic ingredients. A complete meal (3 recipes and an appetizer), pizza di scarole (vegetable pizza) or di friarielli, a pasta dish, a vegetable or fish dish and then a dessert, prepared and accompanied by the wine which best complements it.
Please note that there is a small dog, Chica. If you don’t like dogs, please let your host know in advance.
Class includes 3 courses preparation, welcome drink, tour of the house, and lunch. Class can last from 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. All the experiences are scheduled to last 3 hours, sometimes 3.5 hours. The duration depends on the dishes prepared. Neapolitan cuisine is an elaborated cooking, for example, to prepare the ragù (a sauce) it takes about 8 hours, that’s why esplora Napoli prefers to prepare simple dishes.
Guests will see, cook and eat the dishes. If there will be a dish that requires a lot of time to be cooked, they will see how to prepare it and then eat the ones already prepared. Most of the recipes will be prepared by guests, led and supervised by the gastronome.
The cooking class will start at about 11:30am. Esplora Napoli will meet you at about 10:30am at Casa Tolentino. You arrive at 10:45 at Villa Rivalta, depending on the traffic. You then meet the gastronome and owner Sergio Corbino. Have a welcome drink and tour of the house and some chat.
The location is an incredible place with a stunning terrace overlooking the entire Gulf of Naples, the Mount Vesuvius and Capri. Chat to get to know a bit, then start the class. After
preparing all dishes you‘ll have a lunch, water and wine included, end up with a dessert, then chat again. Caffè and ammazzacaffè (kills coffee) is a stiff drink - what you need after a Neapolitan lunch.
Late in the afternoon, transfer from Casa Tolentino to a city winery for a sensorial and cultural path. Meet your local contact and transfer by car or van to Alto Grado for a wine tasting. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by Enzo, the owner and wine expert. Enzo will lead you into the Campania wine world through an extraordinary sensorial experience.
All tastings are accompanied by local products of mozzarella, salami, and meats. Wine has a fundamental "emotional" value, a seductive and very strong power linked to the ability to create contacts between people in addition to its taste and pleasures.
Highlights: Esplora Napoli's exclusive guide: The Wanderer, Piazza del Plebiscito, San Martino Castle and Charterhouse, Pignasecca Market, Piazza del Gesù e and Chiesa del Gesù Nuovo, Artisan Mauro Squillace, gloves’ stylist, Spanish quarters (if there will be enough time : Waterfront).
An intensive training, theory and practice of ancient traditional Neapolitan dances with live music and singing in a small theatre. An awesome Tarantella & Tammurriata’s lesson takes place. Duration is approximately 2 hours.
“Dance the life to the rhythm of the spirit", is the slogan of the artist and dancer, Angelo, who will lead the guests to feel the passion of the popular dance, learning involving movements which seem to free the spirit from the worries.
Folklore, sound, ritual and magic take possession of the mind and body in a perfect union. The dancers, as if bitten by the tarantula and possessed by a strange evil, launch into a wild dance moving every part of the body.
The Neapolitan Tammurriata is a "quid" of the traditional music, it was born in 18th century in Naples but its history takes you a lot further than that, to the Greek cults in honor of Dionysus.
During the class you'll have brief presentation, the theory / practice. Internship provides the basic rudiments of Tarantella, the most widespread dance in various forms of southern Italy. The lessons will be accompanied by live music with Angelo 'O Capitano Picone at the organ and Kevin Stefanini at the drums and the voice. The conduct of the dance will be performed by Angela Esposito (dancer expert).
Dances practiced: some forms of Tarantella will be discussed, in particular La Tammurriata, in use in Naples and the province, but there will also be raids in the Tarantella
Montemaranese and Cilento. The interns will be supplied with castagnette (castanets/nacchere) and other typical folk instruments, such as triccabballacche, putipù and scetavajasse. Place: The Teatrino di Perzechella. Duration: approximately 3 hours. Suggested dress code: shoes and comfortable clothing (it is suggested tzigane skirts for women and waistcoat for men).
An original alternative to the show lunch with a delicious Neapolitan sandwich filled with the classic contours of the Neapolitan culinary tradition, with dairy products or meat, wine and tarallucci, served in the splendid Perzechella Teatrino. With a show of theater and music entitled "O Captain and the crew of Mamma Schiavona."
A journey into the World of Tarantella. Particularly suitable for interns who can rehearse in complete freedom, what they learned during the course.
The course will begin at 11am and approximately finish at 4pm, including time for lunch and rest.
Villa Rivalta, the warm atmosphere of a real Neapolitan house! A unique experience; a journey into the deep soul of Naples, its traditional music and cuisine, set in a historic dwelling, a magnificent terrace overlooking the entire Gulf of Naples, on the Posillipo Hill, the villa is an astonishing mansion dating back to the 19th century. During winter the event takes place inside or on request outside with outdoor heaters depending on the weather.
Experience a live musical performance underlined by the narration of an expert while savoring the flavors of the Neapolitan cuisine unchanged over time. Breakfast at Casa Tolentino consists of Neapolitan coffee made with Neapolitan coffee maker, or té, milk, harvesting seasonal fruit, oranges, and a fresh orange juice, seasonal fruits, grilled toast with cheese and ham, some cheese, croissant or sweet handmade.
