Diktynna Tour designed this holiday to offer food lovers a captivating blend of hands-on cooking, scenic locations, tradition and history. You will have a week to explore Cretes flavors and aromas, with the town of Chania as a base. Enjoy living an insider's experience that captures the essence of the islands cuisine, people and culture. You will meet with producers and growers, be welcomed by chefs, and delight by the sights, sounds and tastes of colorful markets.
The Porto Veneziano Hotel is at a 10-minute walk from Chanias city center. It is an ideal place to stay, as the most popular attractions are within walking distance. After its renovation in April 2013, the hotel now offers a minimal navy design, excellent quality beds with double mattresses, and geothermal air conditioning system, environmentally friendly. The hotel has been certified to serve a full Greek breakfast buffet with a Cretan note, and attempts to provide a great journey to the island's flavors and tastes.
Diktynna Travel will pick you up from Chania airport and transfer you to the hotel, situated by the Venetian port of Chania. You will have an early evening meeting with your host, who will present you the details of the program, followed by a welcome seafood dinner at the waterfront restaurant. Start with a morning walking tour around the town of Chania, including its main sights, as well as a number of special culinary stops at the central market, some small and special foodie shops, a traditional bakery and a pastry workshop. You will try some great artisan-made foods, a variety of local cheese, pastries and more. Have the rest of the afternoon free to rest or visit one of the nearby beaches. You will meet up with Diktynna Travel in the evening for a tasting of local wines at a quaint wine shop. Dinner will follow at an atmospheric restaurant known for its cuisine, which gives Cretan traditional recipes a modern touch. Overnight in Chania.
You will drive towards the Akrotiri peninsula, for a visit to the monastery of Agia Triada Tzagarolon. Built in the 17th century, with a majestic cruciform church, the monastery is set on a wonderfully overgrown landscape of olive groves, vineyards and cypress trees. You will explore the monasterys grounds and learn about its history, as well as from its production of organic olive oil and wine. You will continue your exploration towards the verdant province of Apokoronas, where you will reach the tiny village of Maheri. There, you will have your second cooking class, with fresh produce from the garden. After your delicious rustic lunch, continuing your scenic drive along the foothills of the White Mountains, you will visit the studio of a known local ceramicist, before your late afternoon return to the hotel. You will have the rest of the day free to dine on your own. A list of selected restaurants and picks from their menus will be provided.
You start the day driving to a traditional village. Visit a beekeeper and get introduced to honey making, beekeeping and enjoy some honey tasting. Your next visit will be an ecological prototype farm that promotes traditional production of organic olive oil, where the olive oil is stone milled and cold pressed. You will be guided around the premises and have an olive oil tasting session, accompanied by the owners. The tour will continue with a refreshing swim at the scenic Falassarna beach, followed by an early dinner with fresh fish at a typical family-run tavern in the area. Return to the hotel in the evening and spend the overnight in Chania.
You will spend the day at a special winery located in the outskirts of Chania. After a visit with a 4x4 car to the vineyards, on the foothills of the White Mountain, you will have a tour of the production area and a tasting of their premium wines. After that, you will experience a hands-on cooking class near the old family house that the owners have charmingly refurbished. Lunch will follow and a late afternoon return at the hotel. You will dine on your own. Overnight in Chania.
Free day. An optional full day trip to Knossos Palace and the Heraklion Museum, can be organized at your request. Overnight in Chania.
Visit a market for a table cooking class that will be hosted in a 17th century farmhouse, surrounded by organic gardens, at the outskirts of Chania. The location has been selected for its character and ambience, which makes it the perfect backdrop. You will prepare a number of typical, easy to make mezedes. A list of recipes will be given to you, to add to your collection and share with friends at home. Lunch will follow. You have the afternoon free. In the evening, you will meet Diktynna Travel for the farewell dinner, which consists of a laid back Cretan style barbecue, with some surprise guests.
Guests will be driven to Chania airport for departure. For those departing from Heraklion airport or port, private transfers will be arranged. With time permitting and upon request, privately-guided visits to Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum can be added.
