The experience begins from your hotel, where we head for the east, towards the settlement of KaloHorio, the lacy coast of Merambello, as it is called. Arriving in Kalo Horio, you head for the village of Prina, and somewhere in the middle of the route, you reach the Apiary, located in a magical landscape filled with pine trees, flowers, different herbs, and an incredible view of the east. The position of the Apiary is not accidental, as the Cretans were the first to place their bees facing the east because an eastern exposure is necessary for the bees as full sunlight is produced in this position.

An experienced beekeeper will be waiting there for you who will offer you a journey into the world of bees. He will describe with great enthusiasm the perfect bee society and the special role each one plays in it, starting from the worker bees and drones to the queen.

Observe carefully as you will be participating personally in this experience and with the help of the beekeeper and always wearing the special gear which will be given to you, you will have the opportunity to open your own beehive as well as taste the delicious honey directly out of the honeycomb itself.

"Mittato" - the shepherd’s hut

Driving through the forest of Krousta, you will be enchanted by its rich fauna and flora, the colors of nature and its smells, and on reaching your destination the incomparable beauty of the landscape will soothe your soul. Among the green colors of nature and surrounded by the imposing mountains, you will find the shepherd’s hut, where you will have the opportunity to interact with the shepherd’s wife and create unique traditional recipes, such as cheese pies, fresh pasta, stuffed vine leaves, ‘Gamopilafo ’goat with rice and much more. Follow her instructions faithfully and create delicious Cretan recipes.

The magic ends in the presence of sheep and goats grazing in the surrounding area and you will have the opportunity to milk them and produce authentic, delicious cheese. Live like a real shepherd and return home richer in experiences after socializing with the proud Cretans.

“Aroma” biocosmetic lab

A visit to biocosmetic lab where guests will have the splendid opportunity to create their own perfume, soap, or face cream under the guidance of an expert. Besides, they can discover different kinds of herbs from the Minoan times.

In the Mediterranean sea and at the crossroads of three continents (Europe, Asia, and Africa), lies Crete, an island approximately 257 kilometers long, with a landscape of rare beauty that features steep mountains, fertile plains, and sandy beaches.

An island full of surprises and contrasts, which charms visitors from the very first moment with its colorful landscape, the unaffected settlements of its hinterland, the warm and welcoming nature of the Cretans, the variety of its products, the famous Minoan paths and its excellent cuisine that serves as the base for the famous Mediterranean diet

The Cretan diet is not just a variety of dishes laid on the table. It comprises a whole philosophy of life and represents the lifestyle of the Cretan people. In the Cretan culture, food plays a central role. The unique Cretan diet is a healthy and tasty diet with centuries-old recipes and modern creative versions, which are always cooked, of course, with the same top quality pure products of the blessed Cretan earth.

This diet is not just a variety of dishes presented on the table; it embodies a whole philosophy of life, the quality way of life of the Cretan people. The lucky ones that will visit the modern restaurants in the cities or the small taverns and cafes in the country will have wonderful experiences, participating in the life of the local people.

The following meals are included:

  • Breakfast

The following dietary requirement(s) are served and/or catered for:

  • Regular (typically includes meat and fish)
If you have special dietary requirements it's a good idea to communicate it to the organiser when making a reservation

  • Visiting wineries
  • Dining out every night to a Cretan-selected taverna

Chrissi Island tour

Grab your swimming costumes, towels, sunscreens, and even your fishing rods, and head off to Chrissi Island. You will board on a boat at about 10:00 a.m. from Ierapetra town and head to the beautiful sand-dune island off the southern coast of Crete, jumping into the water wherever and whenever you fancy, assuming your captain agrees! The crew will cook for you onboard and even prepare your own fish if you are lucky to catch one. The captain will oblige to tell you all about the wealth of life of the Mediterranean Sea, the fishing traditions, and local fishy recipes. (subject to availability)

Discover East Crete excursion

Not that you need encouragement to discover the beauty of eastern Crete, but Crete Experience can put together an itinerary for you to discover hidden gems, from monasteries to museums, from spectacular blue flag beaches to places to eat, from lookout points to shady caves. Let them put together for you an itinerary that fits your interests and appetite.

Explore Spinalonga Island

Spinalonga Island is known as “To Nisi” by local people or "the island" by those who have read the best-selling English novel “The Island” by Victoria Hislop. Unpack the layers of Cretan history through time. A 15-minute boat trip of the coast of Plaka at Elounda will take you to what was once a Cretan peninsular. The island was carved out of the coast for defense purposes during the Venetian occupation and has faced key transformations through time. In addition to the abandoned leper colony and the fortress, Spinalonga is known for its small pebble beaches and shallow waters.

Stay for lunch at Plaka Bay and enjoy the holiday buzz. Let Crete Experience recommend some tasty hangouts in the area and go on and take your pick on what you fancy. On the way back, they suggest a visit to Kritsa village. The village is packed with local characters and goodies. Women of Kritsa were famous for their weaving, lace making, and embroidery skills and it is still possible to buy handmade items. In light of the many hours' work in handmade pieces you might think these items are expensive, but most people these days are content with more commercially produced items that are also available.
