Home of Saint Benedict, patriarch of Western monasticism, Norcia is the capital of Valnerina, a land of mysticism from which the spiritual adventures of the Saint began. The town is considered a wine and food capital of the region. In the last weekend of February every year in Umbria the National Exhibition of black truffle happens with typical products of Valnerina. This event has grown to international status in recent years and is of top interest to lovers of prosciutto, salami, capocollo, ricotta, fresh and seasoned cheeses and, naturally, the famous Norcia black truffle, as well as a host of other local specialties. The entire event takes place in the open air, in the Piazza San Benedetto.
La Volpe e l'Uva is a beautifully restored farmhouse overlooking the Umbria Valley. If you wish to experience the joy of authentic Umbrian living and explore the region and its splendour, then this is the right place for you. The farmhouse is surrounded by 10 hectares of olive groves, vineyards, and fruit trees. Five independent apartments have been restored around the ancient stone house, which dates back to the 17th century.
There is a lovely swimming pool from which you can enjoy the panoramic view. All apartments have been comfortably furnished in farm-style teak furniture with great attention for detail. The farm lies on a hill and offers absolute peace and quiet with spectacular views of the surrounding hills and Perugia. The farmhouse has a lounge with cooking area, a bedroom with a double sofa bed, and bathroom. Bed linen, towels, and final cleaning are included. Each apartment has a living space with a well-equipped kitchenette and a double sofa bed, a double or twin bedroom, and a bathroom. In the communal garden, each apartment has its own area, equipped with table and chairs to have lunch or dinner al fresco.
Three tours are provided during this Umbrian culinary trip: a visit of the medieval cities of Bevagna and Montefalco, an expert guided tour on the local truffle track with hunting demonstration, a tour of the farm and visit of small museum, and last but not least, a guided tour of Norcia and its beautiful monuments.
The farmhouse La Volpe e l'Uva is located in central Italy, Umbria, North of Perugia, in a hilly position, very near to the main Umbrian towns and near to the Tuscany. It is only 4 kilometers far from the historic centre of Perugia and it offers a suggestive view of the Umbrian hills. The proximity of Perugia makes the farm's position ideal for visiting other artistic towns in Umbria, such as Assisi, Gubbio, Todi, Orvieto, the Trasimeno Lake, and towns in Tuscany like Siena, Arezzo, and Cortona.
During your stay at the farm, make sure to enjoy your breakfasts; in your apartment you will find coffee, milk, biscuits, jams, butter, and sugar. The three hands-on cooking classes will result in four-course meals that you will enjoy accompanied by Umbrian wines from the farm; liquors will be served after dinner/lunch. You will also enjoy one guided tour of a local vineyard and cellar, ending with a tasting of local Umbrian specialties and wines.
Enjoy the truffle hunting and tasting: get familiar with their flavor in order to better face the Nero di Norcia festival that you will participate on the third day of your trip. There, you will find stands selling black truffles and a great deal of gastronomic events and demonstrations that are held throughout the fair including guided tastings of wines, salamis, and cheeses. During these cooking classes, you will learn how use the traditional Italian ingredients and how to combine them to make delicious recipes. You will prepare a four-course meal: starter, first course, main course, and dessert.
Cook in Umbria will teach you to cook authentic Italian and Mediterranean dishes in an informal and friendly environment, where people learn the passion of the Italian kitchen and have fun doing it. In the cooking classes all pasta, pizza, gnocchi are homemade. Recipes vary according to the seasons, utilizing only the freshest and quality ingredients available. The farm Cook in Umbria produces vegetables, fruits, eggs, jams, wine and extra-virgin olive oil: the same local ingredients that are used to prepare the food during the cooking lessons.
Take your time to enjoy the surroundings at your own pace or even explore the proximity of Perugia: Assisi, Gubbio, Todi, Orvieto, the Trasimeno Lake, and also towns in Tuscany like Siena, Arezzo, and Cortona.
