Kerala backwater cruise experience

Since ancient times Kerala has used its lake and canals as a water network for transporting men and material. Being aboard a houseboat is tranquil, stressless adventures where you will see the beautiful Kerala keep passing by. The houseboat cruise down the mystical backwaters of Kerala is indisputably an experience of a lifetime.

Besides being a cultural heritage, the houseboats (boat-houses) of Kerala offer an innovative kerala holiday idea. The country houseboat in kerala is referred to as 'Kettuvallam'. These eco-friendly Kerala houseboats are made from local materials like bamboo poles, coconut fibre, ropes, bamboo mats, carpets etc.

Usually kerala houseboats are the giant country crafts that are as long as 60 to 70 feet. While aboard the houseboat in Kerala, you may enjoy the facilities of a star categorized hotel. Basically a houseboat is well appointed with an open lounge, one or more bath attached bedrooms and a kitchenette.

Kerala house-boat is generally manned by a crew, consisting of a cook, guide and oarsman. Lazing and relaxing on the sun decks is one of the most popular activities on the boat-house in Kerala. Traditional lanterns take up the place of electricity on the houseboat. On the boat, you may enjoy the serene surroundings along with savoring the traditional specialties of Kerala. Fresh seafood adds to the sumptuous Kuttanadan meals available on the Kerala houseboat.

A boat ride into the countryside offers a close look at rustic kerala village life-skiff-fishermen launching their cockleshell boats, large flocks of domesticated ducks waddling down to the water from thatched houses on the banks. Women, neck-deep in water, with their waist-length hair heaped in a crown, catching fish with their feet, aimless cattle grazing in lush pastures, white lotuses floating here and there in small, shallow ponds.

The tourists on the houseboats may relive the authentic life in the villages of kerala. These kerala houseboat or the taxis on the backwaters of kerala pass through several towns and villages of Kerala. The Vembanad Lake forms the largest backwater stretch in Kerala. You may enjoy Kumarakom, Alleppey or Alappuzha, Kottayam and Kollam on the houseboat while enjoying backwaters of Kerala.

Coconut Creek Homestay Cooking Vacations

Kerala homestay is a program promoted by Kerala Tourism Department, which allows tourists to Kerala, to live in a Kerala home and get to know the culture and lifestyle of this land in a better way. Feel at home, is the concept which gave birth to the practice called Homestay.

Tourists who travel and reach far away places always find it hard to get accustomed to the culture of distinct places. Living along with the natives, in their own houses and environment, helps travelers to know the lifestyle, language, cuisines, religion and every aspect of the local culture, in the best way possible.

Coconut Creek, a typical Kerala Homestay which has bagged the award for the Best Kerala Homestay from Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala is the pioneer in promoting Kerala Tourism. It is a Kerala Govt. approved Homestay, accredited with the highest Diamond House' rating.

The main attraction is that it lies next to the famous Kumarakom backwater creek. That itself makes it distinguishable and attractive. Coconut Creek can be called a true Kerala Homestay, since it is located in a village, on 4 acres of land filled with typical Kerala crops like coconut, mango, banana, jackfruit etc.

In the vivid beauty of nature blended with the welcoming breeze of the Kumarakom Lake, Coconut Creek, gives freshness through out the day you spend here. While returning from Kerala you will surely carry along a bunch of memories about this sweet Homestay, which you will always love to cherish.

Coconut Creek home-stay is an exotic haven of tranquility in a beautiful creek of Kumarakom Lake. Spread across 4 acres, the ambience here is typically Keralite, facilitated with every modern convenience.

Coconut Creek, the Kerala Homestay has several features different from other similar places. Another major advantage is that many other tourist spots are lying adjacent to it. So it will be easy for the guests to reach their desired destinations at the earliest.

It is well connected to other tourist destinations in Kerala like Alappuzha, Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, Periyar and Kovalam. All the assistance required will be provided by the well educated and good mannered members of Coconut Creek's family at any time.

"When reviewing this property you have to remember it's a homestay and cannot judge it against hotel standards. In terms of what we wanted which was a cheap overnight stay before our houseboat trip this served its purpose. The village is quiet but we walked to the boat jetty - 2kms- and had a wonderful insight into village life by the water. The property is set in lovely grounds with some great garden furniture. The room is basic but clean and the food freshly cooked. The owners were welcoming and their helper does his best. In terms of negatives the towels were very old/hard and a sheet would have been better than a blanket. Couldn't work the shower and finally gave up, using the tap with the ubiquitous bucket and measuring jug - truly going native!! This is not going to be everybody's cup of tea so if you want the comforts of a hotel, best rethink."

"I stayed at this lovely home-stay in January 2016 and found it relaxing and peaceful. I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to watch and help a little with the preparations for dinner (my only cooking opportunity in India). The room was comfortable and quiet. The owners were very helpful in arranging transport to a local bird sanctuary. It was an excellent place to stay in this beautiful part of India."

"We enjoyed our stay at your place, it was truly a beautiful place. The food was delicious and all the facilities at the home-stay. Thank you for the good food, hospitality and beautiful place we had when we came over at the home stay. Thank you for arranging the boat house trip, the crew was awesome and we enjoyed the boat ride, Munnar was also beautiful so was the hotel. We enjoyed our trip from the time we reached to your place to the time we came back from Munnar. Just wanted to say how great everyone was and how nice everyone was to us on our adventure. Hope we meet again and hope our paths cross again. With best regards, Anil, Dolly, Emily, and Evan."

"They have nice and beautiful garden to sit and relax or have breakfast what they serve it. You can also have delicious homemade dinner. A man who works there as a waitress and gardener took us also for a short boat trip along the canal from the house to the lake. If you want to go and see around you can take a tuk-tuk."

"The home-stay is located on a functioning coconut plantation. It's a small distance away from the main town, so it's nice and quiet. The rooms are fully equipped and there is free internet. The internet can be a little iffy at times, but let's face it, you're not there for the internet. They have swings and hammocks dotted around the grounds and a creek running through the property. I absolutely loved my time there and recommend it to anyone traveling to Kumarakom."

"This was a wonderful property. The rooms, washrooms, dinner space, and swimming pool, everything was awesome. The property has lovely quaint looking bridges which help you reach the Bogmalo beach, which is around 200 meters away from the hotel. The room was impeccable, very spacious with all the requirements in place. The Wi-Fi was fast and good. Housekeeping was fantastic. The interesting thing was the small sit out in front of the room. A word about the staff - they were prompt, non-interfering but very friendly and polite. Excellent - we were impressed by the wine bottle for my husband's birthday. If we go to Goa again, we would definitely stay at The Coconut Creek"

"A friend and I spent two nights here on arrival to Goa. Fully enjoyable, staff is so friendly. Food was excellent. After moving around to 5 different locations/hotels we returned to spend our final day there. Again they were so helpful to help us sort out and print for us our boarding pass for our return home. Also Joets at the beach, again excellent food and service. Will definitely be returning with the Mrs. next time."

"Our occasion (motive) of the kumarakom homestays exposure was that we wanted to learn more about kumarakom-alleppey backwater life besides the touristy places we had already visited. After we stayed here, I can say it really opens your eyes and gives you a better understanding of kerala rural life.During the homestay you live with Babu and his wife Regina and their support staff. They live near Vemaband lake and konchumada village. Babu is native kumarakom and she is originally from this kumarakom back water village.Regina is from kottayam but has lived in kumarakom since 1978. Although you live with the family, you spend the night in your own bungalow. This allows you a little bit more privacy and time for yourself. The bungalow is basic (no luxury rooms, no multi cuisine restaurant, no hotel life), but top clean and well maintained. A perfect choice to sleep during the homestay. The homestay involves more than just living with the family. In the day time advise you to where to go out for a walk , bird watching and you stop to talk to the locals. Babu starts the conversation very naturally and it is possible to ask anything you like and sometimes locals even asked questions to us.In the evening two locals were invited to talk to us about various subjects. The first night, we talked to Staff Lalichan and saw how to catch the fish by net. Very interesting to learn more about fisher man life in kumarakom. The second night we spoke with two nuns about the education system of kerala. Those conversations really opened our eyes about how things work in present days in kerala and were very valuable information. The homestay also gives you a taste of kerala food. Regina prepare very mouth watering foods, the best we had in Kerala or may be in India so far. If you want to see more of kumarakom and if you are really interested in how things work in this state, then you should definitely experience this homestay."

"We had great time in kumarakom with Babu and family. Its simple and best stay. My wife and kids enjoyed plenty. My inlaws were very comfortable in coconut creek, the lake is just near by. Motor boat ride through the village was great and awesome. The food is very tasty and authentic, it gives a thumbs up to all who visit Kumarakom. Thanks to Kerala Tourism advisor from Kuwait for booking us the place."

"This was the most memorable holiday break in our whole kerala tour. Although we stayed for just two nights we were made most welcome by Regina and Babu. Their house is beautiful heritage, and it was a sheer delight to be able to sit and talk with the family.I've saved the best bit until last - the food. Regina cooking is superlative, and she is very mindful of her clients tastes and preferences. If I were to return to Kumarakom the coconut creek will be my first choice of bed and breakfast."

"We stayed here 3 nights in early December. Coconut Creek is a farm and a homestay, but the farm is really out of view and not integrated into the experience. Clean, comfortable for India, the owner and staff were 'reserved' in a most polite sort of way plus incredibly helpful/ attentive, and it is set off the beaten path, which meant a calm, relaxed atmosphere.Oh, included in the package deal that we chose were the breakfast and supper. The breakfasts were good, but the suppers were spectacular. This is Southern India cooking at its best and essentially deserves the same write up we gave Saravana Bhavan in Munnar. Superb! (Only Coconut Creek does offer meat dishes.) The only thing to note is that the wifi could be a bit spotty. The birding in the area is amazing."

"We rented directly on the site of the homestay. We stayed for fout nights at the homestay. We enjoyed the quietness of the place, the kindness, the discretion and the availability of Lalichen the butler. The owners are very honest, very discreet but ready to inform you and help you. We spent four relaxing days, it was really lovely."
