Circle of Misse in the Loire Valley includes the Misse maison de maître and River House a fabulous 18th century rustic stone house with immaculate gardens overlooking the Thouet, both in the Thouet River Valley. It also includes the elegant and charming town house in the main market town of Thouars and La Pomme d’Or, a wonderful collection of lovingly restored cottages, stables, and barns enclosed by a stone wall courtyard with swimming pool in La Chappelle Mouliere. All the properties have gorgeous comfortable rooms, with double beds, wardrobes, and writing desks. Most share a bathroom. All properties have relaxing and inspiring spaces for hanging out, kitted with lots of creature comforts. There are always available drinks and snacks provided.

Circle of Misse is a working kitchen that is at the heart of all activities. Here, turning out three exceptional meals every day, along with an amazing selection of baked goods, homemade charcuterie, and other culinary delights, you’ll become a part of that world. Your French culinary course starts late afternoon on Wednesday and finishes early Sunday morning. Every day, you will do a combination of sessions that include hands-on cooking, practical tips, and kitchen skills development. You will visit artisan food producers, oil presses, cheese producers, vineyards, markets, and other sites where you’ll learn about food and engage your senses.

You’ll explore and taste, learning why certain foods and flavors or foods and wines combine better than others. You will discuss culinary history and make connections between food, culture, nature, science, happiness, and well-being. You will learn kitchen skills and techniques you can apply at home to become a better, happier, and more confident cook, and also to impress your friends. The teaching kitchen and dining area offer lovely views across fields of wheat and sunflowers down to the river and across to ruins of the abbey.

Included excursions

Excursions to area attractions have been arranged for your stay with Circle of Misse. Excursions include visits to markets, vineyards, oil presses, artisan food producers, and various chateaus.

This retreat will take place in Misse, France. The name refers to a place; a 19th century maison de maître situated in verdant farmland in the oxbow (the place where the river circles back on itself) of the Thouet River in the small village of Misse on the southern edge of the Loire Valley in France. Thus, the Circle of Misse.

Food is the focus of this vacation and it goes without saying that you will have the opportunity to experience many facets of French cuisine. You will be creating many different types of dishes that fall into categories such as vegetarian, meat and fish. With only a short distance from the coast and many local farms, your ingredients will be the freshest you’ve ever seen. Since you’ll be cooking at least twice daily, all of your food and meals are included; you will enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals daily.
