This tour is not your average countryside walk. Castello Taverna will immerse you in real Cretan nature and food culture, while walking through enchanting hidden countryside. Local Cretan and international multilingual guides will show you the enchanting hidden Crete and share with you their ancient food and culture knowledge. You will fully interact with the raw nature, foraging wild herbs, vegetables, fruits, and nuts. All products are organic and non-GMO, as Greece has prohibited GMO crops and seeds.

You will be staying at The Little Farm House, one of many private houses in the village of Kastellos that Castello Taverna has connections to accommodate their guests who are taking part on this Eco Foraging Walking Tours. Single or double bedroom options are available.

During this program, after a beautiful walk through the mountain-village of Kastellos (north of Rethmynon) and surrounding areas, you will return to Catello Taverna and eco farm to sample the foods you foraged and eat a tasty traditional Cretan lunch. At different times of the year, the farm next to the taverna is active in producing local olive oil, wine, milk, cheese, raki, and more.​

In September, you can be part of the wine making process, harvesting the grapes. Throughout the summer, there are an abundance of local fruits, such as plums, figs, berries that can be collected for jam making or eaten on the spot. Then there is the milk products. The sheep and goats roam free on green pastures and produce excellent organic milk and cheese. Learn how to milk a sheep and see how traditional Cretan Cheese is made.

This Eco Lunch - Foraging Walking Tours will leave you energized and de-stressed from modern life because you reconnect with nature. You will experience a beautiful walk combined with practical Cretan food and drink culture knowledge.

For four days, you will be taking part on the Foraging Walking Tours and you can choose which days you take part on your seven days stay. The other three days, Castello Taverna can suggest secluded beaches (possibly your private beach for a day) or the famous natural attractions, such as Balos, Elafonisis, Matala caves, Samaria Gorge, Falassarna and the Venetian town of Chania, and many other concierge options they can suggest.

You will start the foraging walking tour after visiting the Minoan Somatas archaeological site.

Seasonal variations program

February, March, and April

  • Picking edible wild mushrooms, asparagus, avronies (looks like asparagus), thistles, flowers, oregano, thyme, mint, and herb tea.
  • Milking ship, cheese making, and collecting eggs in the farm.

May, June, and July

  • Picking edible wild asparagus, celery, thistles, flowers, oregano, thyme, mint, figs, blackberries, and many other fruits and herbs for tea.
  • Traditional Cretan bread baking, sheering sheep, and collecting eggs in the farm. Lamb roasting lunch.

August, September, and October

  • Picking wild blackberries, cherries, nuts, figs, quince, and many other fruits and herbs for tea.
  • Harvesting grapes, wine making, and Raki distillation.

November, December, and January

  • Picking olives and olive oil making. Traditional Cretan bread baking.
  • Picking wild herbs, mushrooms, snails, fruits, and eggs in the farm.

Every walking tour will be different depending the time of the year as shown above, but also depending on the route that you walk, as you may find less or more quantity of the wild vegetables, fruits, and nuts.​

This Eco Lunch - Foraging Walking Tours starting time is 9:30 a.m. till 14:00 p.m. Lunch is from 2:00 p.m. till 5:00 p.m.

Visit to the Minoan Somatas archeological site is included.

This tour will take place in Kastellos, Crete, Greece.

You will eat the result of your foraging or picking on the farm, cook and eat the bread and cheese you have made together, and drink wine and raki produced by Castello Taverna. Breakfast is included every day, but lunch will only be served on the four days of the Foraging Walking Tours.

You will spend four days foraging, baking bread, making cheese, picking food at the Castello Taverna farm and visiting the Somatas Archaeological Minoan site. The other three days you can go to the beach in Rethymno or to the south. Crete has an infinity of beaches, historic villages, gorges, and mountains to explore. Castello Taverna will be your local concierge giving advice where to go and what to see.

Driving directions from Rethymno

  • When arriving in Rethymno motorway, take the junction to Spilli.
  • Before Armenoi, turn right and Castello Taverna is 500 meters on the right, only 11 km from Rethymno.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Chania International Airport (CHQ) or at Heraklion International Airport (HER). Transfers from your hotel in Rethymnos is included.

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 35% of the total price.
  • The deposit is fully refundable if the booking is cancelled up to 15 days before the arrival date.
