Belgium Breweries Tour

This Flanders classic adventure will take you through many great areas of Belgium. You will visit a number of great breweries and learn from the masters of the craft what makes Belgian beer so great. This trip is for all levels of cyclists as the days vary from 20 to 45 miles of relatively flat cycling along cycle path and rural road, except, of course, while in the city. You will sample beer from small family breweries and drink beer in Westmalle near the source of one of the classic abbey breweries!

Fantastic lodging

A quality night sleep and a great breakfast are only two of the things Beer & Bike Tours look for in lodging. They also find specialty lodging that has space for you to relax after your rides and is local and sustainable.

  • Night 1: Hotel in Leuven
  • Night 2: Het Anker
  • Night 3: Hotel in Antwerp
  • Night 4: Hotel in Ghent
  • Nights 5 and 6: Hotel in Brugges

What is the lodging like?

Beer & Bike Tours tries to book local hotels and bed-and-breakfasts that will give you a feel for the area. All the selected hotels are clean and well kept. They have chosen them based on both personal experience and references from other travelers. If there is a hotel in the area of a tour they offer that you are interested in, let them know and they will try and accommodate your request.

Are the rates single or double occupancy?

All quoted rates are based on double occupancy. If you would like to book a single occupancy room, there will be an additional charge depending on the tour. For more information, please send an inquiry.

Is it possible to arrange pre or post-tour lodging?

Beer & Bike Tours will be happy to book your travel before and after your tour. Send them your arrival dates and they will sort everything on your behalf.

Participant requirements

  • Must be able to cycle the distance each day
  • Must be at least 18 years old to drink beer

Day 1: Leuven

You will be greeted at the airport, train station, or hotel depending on your arrival point. From there, you will have a short walk around Leuven followed by dinner. At dinner, you will be given your cue sheets, GPS, and the rest of your tour information.

Day 2: Leuven to Mechelen - 27 miles

After breakfast, head out to the Sven Nys Cycle Cross Center or the Hof Ten Dormaal brewery for lunch. Upon arriving in Mechelen, drop your stuff at the hotel and host brewery, Het Anker. Het Anker is a 15th century brewery and distillery you will be calling home for the evening. You have the afternoon free to explore Mechelen before dinner at the brewery.

Day 3: Mechelen to Antwerp - 30 to 43 miles

After breakfast, head out of town through the countryside for a stop at a small Trappist Brewery. Only the monks are allowed in the brewery itself so you will be sampling and enjoying lunch at the Café Trappisten next to the Westmalle Abbey. Post lunch, ride on towards your last stop in Antwerp, De Koninck, and the hotel before an evening pub walk and dinner. For those looking for a shorter ride, there is an option to ride directly into Antwerp with a visit to the smallest production brewery in Flanders.

Day 4: Antwerp to Ghent - 38 miles

Today is another day of great rural and small village cycling through Belgium. There are a couple of small breweries along the way and the community of Ghent is wonderful with still more options. Today may end up being your favorite day of the trip. Near the end of today's ride is a great brewery stop as well.

Day 5: Ghent to Brugges - 32 miles

Today, ride for the first of your two days in Brugges. Brugges is a wonderful town with many great breweries and sites. Along the way, visit another small Belgian brewery and stop to have lunch in a cafe. After checking into the hotel, walk over to another brewery for dinner. For anyone interested, after, Beer & Bike Tours will take in a few pubs in the city.

Day 6: Brugges

Optional ride or sight seeing wander. With so much to see and drink in Brugge, there are a number of options for your last day on the official adventure. Visit the Fort Lapin brewery.

Day 7

Check out of the hotel and part ways until the next adventure.

Great guides

The guides are travelers who love to share stories and adventures with you. They are all knowledgeable about beer, cycling, safety, and more.

Can you rent a bike or bring your own? Is there a discount if you bring your own?

Comfort and enjoyment are key to a successful tour. Beer & Bike Tours have rentals available for you or you are welcome to bring your own bicycle.

Are there options for less riding or non-riding partners?

Definitely. Beer & Bike Tours can alter routes to accommodate all riding levels.

How many miles is the average day?

The daily average is between 20 to 50 miles. However, on some tours, there will be longer days. If you would like to ride more or less, they can sort that out for you.

How difficult is the riding, how hilly?

The riding is as challenging as you want to make it. By keeping the groups small, Beer & Bike Tours can adjust a daily ride for the whole group or an individual without hassle. There is always a way to make a longer day of it if you would like. If for any reason you wish to ride in the van for a bit or a whole day, you are more than welcome to.

What will the group be like?

In a word, small. Beer & Bike Tours keep the groups small unless you have a larger group you want to all come on the same tour. They limit their group size to 12 participants and at least one tour leader. There is at least one guide for every six people to ensure you a personal experience.

Is there an age requirement for the tours?

A parent, for safety reasons, must accompany all participants under 18. If you are bringing along your children, send Beer & Bike Tours an inquiry so they can help find the right tour for your family.

How should you prepare for the trip?

General cycling fitness is all that is required. Beer & Bike Tours will provide you with training advice to help you make the most of your tour when you arrive. The better your cycling shape, the more you will enjoy your trip
