Ballyknocken House

Ballyknocken house in Wicklow is a romantic 19th century Victorian farmhouse. Ballyknocken house offers bed and breakfast accommodation and there are 7 charming bedrooms, some with Victorian roll top baths. The romance and charm of Ballyknocken house is reflected in the dcor of our accommodation. Our love of good food led to the opening of the award winning Ballyknocken cookery school seven years ago and guests often book in for mornings cookery.

The peace and tranquility at Ballyknocken, our care and attention, homely log fires, gardens, wonderful walks and award winning breakfasts make us a popular choice for a holiday or a short break. Whatever your choice you will find a log fire, freshly brewed coffee and a warm welcome awaits you here at Ballyknocken.


Day 1

  • Flavor a homemade cake before settling in for the night.
  • Prepare your appetite with a pre-dinner sherry, served at 19:15.

Day 2

  • Enjoy an award-winning Ballyknocken Irish breakfast with coffee.
  • We gather in Ballyknocken cookery school for a hands-on or demonstration cookery course as select from program.
  • Lunch.

As well complimentary pre-dinner sherry and a 4-course set dinner produced with the best of Ballyknocken herbs, soft fruits and local ingredient in comprised on day 1, and, on day 2 enjoy an award winning Irish breakfast plus lunch after cooking class.

The award winning breakfast menu offers a large selection of delicious options including compote of fresh garden fruits, drop scones, jams and chutneys, all of which are homemade and breads that are freshly baked daily. Dinner is prepared using wholesome modern Irish food using local produce from Ballyknocken farm and is available with advanced reservation. The wine list also offers an interesting selection to complement your meal.

Ballyknocken guesthouse is ideally located within easy driving of some of the countrys leading championship golf courses, such as druids glen (home of the Irish open 1996-99). The superior links course, European club; the splendid woodland course of wooden bridge; the course with the views, Wicklow town, to name a few.

Touring Wicklow

Golf, walking, horse riding and sea or river fishing are just some of the holiday activities on offer in the area around Ballyknocken. Explore the many gardens of Wicklow, visit the historic and scenic 6th century monastic settlement of Glendalough, one of Irelands most beautiful visitor destinations and only a 20 minute drive from Ballyknocken or enjoy a Ballyknocken picnic on Brittas bay with its 5 miles of golden coastline, ideal for swimming.

Walking and hiking in Wicklow

County Wicklow, known as the garden of Ireland offers spectacular scenery with its rolling hills, deep valleys, lakes, domed granite mountains and a coastline of picturesque bays. Ballyknocken guesthouse is situated just south of Dublin in the Wicklow mountains which form a huge granite range over 80km long peaking at Lugnaquilla (927meters). Ballyknocken house is the ideal base for walking and hiking holidays in Ireland and boasts Irelands famous hill-walking route, the Wicklow way, close-by making it the perfect choice. We are happy to provide Wicklow walks maps, conveniently packaged in plastic, as well as an assortment of outerwear, boots and brollies available in the front porch. If you prefer a gentler walk try the devil's glen sculpture walk which is also close by and provides wonderful leisurely strolls and vistas.

How to get there

Driving directions from Dublin city center (St Stephen's Green)

  • Follow signs for N11/M11 (Main Dublin - Wicklow - Wexford Road).
  • Drive south onto Merrion Row and then onto Lower Baggot Street , Upper Baggot Street and Pembroke Road.
  • Move to right hand lane and at the traffic lights at the end of Pembroke Road.
  • Turn right, passing Jury's Hotel (Berkley Court Hotel is in the vicinity) and at the third set of lights on this road, just over the bridge of the River Dodder.
  • Turn right onto Angelsea Road.
  • Continue to the lights at the top of this road, ensuring you are in the far left hand lane (there will be a sign here for the N11).
  • Turn left onto the N11 and continue for 26 miles, exiting the N11 into Ashford village.
  • On your right you will see the Chester Beatty Pub, turn right almost immediately thereafter. It is a narrow uphill road.
  • Continue directly on the road for 3 miles approximately.
  • The entrance to Ballyknocken House is on your right and there is a signpost at the gate.

Driving directions from the south

  • Follow the N11 (main Wexford - Dublin Road) and exit where Rathnew / Rathdrum is signposted.
  • Thereafter follow the sign for Rathdrum. Glenealy is just over two miles from this point.
  • On entering Glenealy village, on your left is a church followed by the pub, Glenealy Lodge.
  • Turn right opposite this pub and continue no this road for one mile.
  • The entrance to Ballyknocken House is on your left and there is a signpost at the gate.
