Most people do not seem to realize how much Sicily has to offer. With its sun, its beige pebble and sandy beaches, its warm aqua blue water, its snow-topped volcano of Mount Etna, its forests, and rolling golden hills, Sicily has always been at the center of the Mediterranean Sea, and therefore, it has always been at the center of Mediterranian history.
Sicily is at the center of the Mediterranean Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea has been the center of western civilization since 3,000 years ago. Every major civilization that wanted to have power in Europe and over the Mediterranean Sea "had" to own Sicily. And down through the last almost 3,000 years of the history, every major Mediterranean civilization has left its mark on Sicily! Important artistic, architectural, and cultural remains are visible in virtually every town at virtually every corner of this island in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea.
Taormina can be the base for a more expansive tour of Sicily. Taormina is perfectly situated to offer Italian language students easy access to the beauties and historically huge cultural heritage of Sicily; the right place for combining study and holidays. Babilonia Italian Language School would love to welcome you soon and help you have an unforgettable personal, cultural, and educational experience with them in Taormina, Sicily!
Sicily is a lucky land, anything you plant grows. The quality of food in Sicily is really excellent, from vegetables to fruit. And this thanks to its truly varied territory such as countryside, mountains, plains, and beach soils. On top of that, the Mediterranean Sea gives people the best fish to bring on their tables with dozens of different recipes.
Sicily is a region of excellence for typical and quality products, counting as many as 69 PDO and IGP branded agri-food products, including Capper and di Pantelleria, Ficodindia dell'Etna, Ficodindia di San Cono, Limone di Siracusa, Pesca di Leonforte, Pistacchio Verde di Bronte, Pomocloro di Pachino, Uva da Tavola di Canicatti, Uva da Tavola di Mazzarrone, Arancia di Ribera, and Arancia Rossa di Sicilia.
There are also Sicilian cheeses such as Pecorino Siciliano, Piacentinu Ennese, Ragusano, and Vastedda della Valle del Bence. Meanwhile, the Sicilian oils are Olio Extravergine di Oliva Monte Etna, Olio Extravergine di Oliva Monti Iblei, Olio Extravergine di Oliva Val di Mazara, Olio Extravergine di Oliva Valdemone, Olio Extravergine di Oliva Valle del Belice, and Olio Extravergine di Oliva Valli Trapanesi.
Regarding the wines, Sicily is the region with the largest area under vines in the country with about 17% of the national one. Its wines are internationally recognized among the best Italian wines. This is thanks to the many vines that are grown on the island and to the soil, so different from one side of the island to the other. Among the most renowned vines for the production of red wine, there are Nero d'Avola, Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Frappato, Nocera, Corinta Nero, and Perricone. The best known among the white grape varieties are Catarratto, Grillo, Carricante, Inzolla, Zibibbo, Malvasia, and Moscato di Note.
