Let's join cooking lessons given by Avli! You will receive a small lecture on Cretan cooking terminology at the exquisite garden and hands-on lesson and participation at the kitchen where you learn how to prepare and cook typical Cretan dishes. You will prepare the dishes together with the chef and cooking team. The chef usually decides which dishes to show, however, Avli is welcoming the guest to request specific dishes they wish to learn. Finally, you can eat your own creations!
Avli was created 25 years ago, in 1987, in an effort to optimize and upgrade the historic center of Rethymnon. Avli is housed in a cluster of beautiful Venetian buildings of the 16th century offering the visitor a real acquaintance with the life of Crete. Avli features a unique blend of traditional Cretan architecture with modern luxury and aesthetic. The same approach characterizes the kitchen.
The Cretan food is the pinnacle of Mediterranean cooking. The nutrition has become internationally recognized in recent years as a distinctive dietary regime with great enduring gustatory and nutrition value. Scientific studies have shown that the Cretan dietary model - fundamentally based on the consumption of pure, natural products shield the human organism against diseases and leads to longevity.
The recipes in Cretan cookery, range from the original and traditional to more contemporary and innovative recipes. Such a wide and occasionally unusual choice of dishes has not only provided some fascinating historical and social information but the assortment and variety of flavors, colors, customs and costs suited to all pockets, it also offers a style of cooking which is lively and flexible.
The famous Cretan dishes, cooked in front of the guest while the guest is being encouraged to participate in the cooking, need only oil, water, tomato and some herbs to be so unforgettable tasty, healthy and nourishing. The prototype nutrition model teaches that the richness of flavors is to be found in their absolute purest form, regardless of time and place. If you can’t have everything in life, you can at least live the fairy tale in Avli’s cooking lessons.
You take part in a theoretical class in the beautiful garden, followed by a practical class in the kitchen where you will prepare and cook typical Cretan dishes. In the kitchen, you will be working with the chef and cooking team. After you have cooked, you will eat the dishes you have created!
The duration of the cooking classes is approximately three hours (from 16:00 - 19:00 to 19:30) and then you could optionally walk around the old town to explore the old Venetian port town, while the food will be baked and fouriariko (local goat stew) is boiled and then you’d come back for dinner, usually around 21:00 to indulge the food "you cooked" along with some more dishes of the Cretan cuisine.
