Night six and seven will be in the alpine village of Kranjska Gora. Night eight, nine, and ten will be overnight in a hotel in Portoroz or Piran.

Program

Day 1: Meet in Ljubljana

Upon arrival to Ljubljana, Venice, or Trieste airport or train station, you will be greeted by a driver who will take you to your accommodation in Ljubljana (pick-up from other arrival areas can also be arranged at an additional cost). Soon after your arrival, you'll enjoy a welcome meal and a drink to get to know your tour escorts. Your accommodation will be followed by an evening walk in the capital's center. You will be spending the night at a hotel in Ljubljana.

Day 2: Ljubljana - The Capital City experience

In the heart of Ljubljana, you will be greeted with a relaxed metropolitan charm by day and a night-time energy shared by the inner-city suburbs that surround it. Your day will be marked, among other things, by a tour of the capital's center and its attractions. Weather permitting, a boat ride on the Ljubljanica River is also planned. The day will come to an end at an hotel in Ljubljana.

Day 3: Heart in a vineyard; wine and dine

After breakfast, you will be transported from the urban area of Ljubljana to the rural northern state border. Just after an hour and a half drive time, you will reach an area well recognized in posters and promotional materials of Slovenia. It is most famous for its picturesque heart-shaped road winding among vineyards. With just a bit over 150 inhabitants, the district has a long wine-making tradition, dating back to 12th century when the settlement was dominated by monks.

Soon after reaching the area, you’ll take part in the “Vinotour”, a well-marked footpath that leads through local hill vineyards. There are three paths to choose from, ranging from 5 to 24 km in length and an abundance of temptations along the routes and wine cellars which are all too easy to succumb.

After a break, you will stop for a much-needed lunch once reaching the tourist farm that offers a breathtaking view of a picturesque heart-shaped road winding among vineyards. The road, when viewed from a particular vantage point, forms a perfect heart shape. An image that is becoming increasingly well known, although few people know where this heart is actually located, simply beautiful.

At the farm, enjoy the homemade dishes, cold meats, and other specialties. Join the cellar master for a wine tasting session in the 300-year-old wine cellar with arched ceilings and a waste collection of Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Rhine Riesling, and Pinot Blanc. You will be spending the night in Maribor, Slovenia's second largest city.

Day 4: Maribor

After breakfast, start your day in Maribor, where you'll spend two hours getting to know the old city center. The oldest town core, the Lent, promises an unforgettable experience. It will enchant you with the oldest vine in the world, the oldest living specimen on our planet of a noble grapevine that still bears grapes. With an age of over 400 years, it is registered in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest vine in the world.

You will then drive to the parish of St. Peter and to St. Mary’s Church, where you will visit the very recently discovered catacombs. You'll walk up to the church following the famous

"Way of the Cross" that leads past fourteen renovated chapels. From the last chapel, right on the top of the hill, a breathtaking view opens upon the surrounding area.

Afterwards, your journey will take you to a pleasant, homely ambient where you will be served traditionally prepared delicious domestic dishes.

Lastly, you will stop at the Vinag Wine Cellars. Hidden underneath the center of Maribor, you will find an oenophile’s wonderland. Built in 1847, the cellar is one of the largest and oldest classic wine cellars in Europe. It stretches some 2.5 kilometers long underground tunnels, covers 20,000 meters and is full of wine history. Wooden barrels and concrete tanks are everywhere you look. The specialty in the cellar is the wine archives, where more than 250,000 bottles of the best vintages are kept.

Enjoy the rest of the late afternoon and evening as you wish after being dropped off at your hotel. Spend the night in Maribor.

Day 5: The Oldest Town Ptuj

After breakfast, your tour guide will meet you at hotel lobby when you are ready to start. Ptuj, known as Petovia, is a great place to start your walking fun before exploring further afield. As the oldest town in Slovenia, it is surrounded by vineyards that spread on the river Drava. It saw its heyday in the time of ancient Rome. You will stroll around the atmospheric old town and visit its famous castle which dates back to the 9th century and offers an interesting museum, gallery, and views of the town and river.

However, the valuables of the millennia treasury will be found beneath Slovenia's oldest town. One of the most important stories that helped shape the image, character, past, and present fame of Ptuj, is preserved in the town's wine cellar. It is the oldest of its kind in Slovenia. Its origins are traced back to the Middle Ages. These vaults store the oldest existing wine to be produced in Slovenia, dating back to 1917 and worth up to five figures at auction. Only a few vintages from the four years of the Second World War are missing.

Following the cellar visit and wine tasting, traditional lunch consisting of typical regional dishes will be served in a restaurant nearby. The meal will end with a typical desert. Famous across Slovenia, Gibanica is a delicious multi-layered cake that has made it onto the EU list of regional foods whose recipe and method of baking are protected.

The night will conclude at your hotel in Maribor.

Day 6: The Alpine Slovenia

You will have an early morning departure towards the area of the Slovenian Alps. Today is the day of many unforgettable experiences, including Celje and a unique castle. Here you'll pay a visit to the medieval city core, learn about the history of the Counts of Celje and climb uphill to the Old Castle that overlooks the city. Romantic streets, nooks, and crannies for secret conversations in the park, architecture showcasing the richness and diversity of the past, magnificent façades and friendly squares, each with their own tale to tell. All of them within steps of the center of the city.

You will also visit the Volcji Potok Arboretum: the most visited horticultural facility in Slovenia. Visitors from all parts of the country and from abroad come to Arboretum to be fascinated by millions of daffodil, tulip and other spring flowers.

Also, the Velika Planina: after enjoying the flowers you will ascend Velika Planina by a cable car, where you can relive the tradition of alpine dairy farming and cheesemaking. In the heart of the Alps, feel the simple way of the herdsmen's life, taste their dairy products and admire the unique architecture of the cottages which define Velika Planina.

After saying goodbye to the mountain you will take a short drive to reach Kranjska Gora, where the ski world cup takes place every winter. Enjoy the rest of the late afternoon and evening as you wish after being dropped off at your hotel.

You will be spending the night in the alpine village of Kranjska Gora.

Day 7: Bled

After being picked up, you will depart for the fairytale landscape of Vintar Gorge, one of the easiest and most satisfying trips that is not even a half hour drive from Lake Bled. Here you will admire one of the "Seven wonders of Slovenia". The Vintgar Gorge is a 1600 meters long and 250-meter deep gorge that carves its way through the vertical rocks and hills, graced by waterfalls, pools, and rapids.

After walking up an appetite you will stop at a Gistlina nearby (a typical village inn) with menu based on locally sourced trout to enjoy grilled or fried.

Following the hiking experience, an exquisite lunch and a freshly brewed cappuccino, it is time to pay a much-expected visit to the pearl of Slovenian Alps - Lake Bled. A guided tour of a charming Bled and a visit of a confectionery you will have the chance to snack on a typical Bled dessert, kremsnita. This is a vanilla cream cake, the most famous dessert in the country.

After, you will aboard a pletna, a wooden boat, to the only Slovenian island with a church. Here you can ring the famous wishing bell and make a wish.

Enjoy the rest of the late afternoon and evening as you wish after being dropped off at your hotel. The night will be spent at the alpine village of Kranjska Gora.

Day 8: Trenta Valley, Soca River, and Kobarid

You will depart in the morning from Kranjska Gora towards Trenta Valley. This is the day to have your camera ready! After breakfast, the drive will take you to some of Slovenia’s most photogenic attractions starting with a visit to beautiful mountains, waterfalls, gorges and stone arches. The road will lead us up 1,600 meters to the high Vrsic pass. The road to Vrsic is definitely one of the most scenic roads in the Alps and leads directly to the upper part of Trenta Valley.

Once there, you will start to follow the stream of Soca River from its turquoise colored spring to emerald green riverbeds. Even though this region is effortlessly picturesque, the most attractive section of Soca River will be discovered by a unique rafting experience where you will receive neoprene suits and helmets. You might row hard but with a great guide, there will be much time for fun. You will even stop your raft for a while and take time to splash around.

In the afternoon you will visit the well known Kobarid Museum of World War I. This is where the Insonzo Front took place in the valley of the Soča River, also described by the famous E. Hemingway in his novel 'A Farewell to Arms'.

After departing, you'll reach the Slovene Riviera. Dinner, accompanied by a wine tasting, will be served after settling into the hotel in Portoroz or Piran. After, there will be free time to rest at the hotel or explore the surroundings.

Day 9: Slovene Riviera and Piran

Spend this day relaxing as you please. Consider a visit to one of the local châteaux: Château Vinakoper and Château Santomas are both well worth exploring. Why not visit the lovely town of Piran, which boasts a beautiful cathedral, a "Shells and Snail Museum", or the "Maritime Museum". You could also join one of the unique, sociable, and highly informative daily tours (optional activities can be added upon request). For instance, the "boat wine tour", "Piran wine and food walking tour", or the "Vespa wine tour" to find out more about Slovene Riviera.

You will be staying overnight in a hotel at Portoroz or Piran.

Day 10: Slovene riviera; Koper and Izola

A day at leisure to do what you wish. There's so much to do here that it's worth spending another day exploring, relaxing, and enjoying this beautiful coastal region. You will be staying in a hotel at Portoroz or Piran.

Day 11: Departure

Today marks the end. You'll say goodbye to Piran and Slovenia and begin your journey home. There will be one last chance to enjoy the last coffee together. After 11 days of wonderful sightseeing, you will be transferred to the Ljubljana or Venice or Trieste Airport or train station.
