Merida is the capital and largest city in Yucatan State and the cultural and financial capital of the region. It is a modern, cosmopolitan city with museums, art galleries, restaurants, shops, and boutiques. A major center of commerce, Merida Yucatan is considered the crossroads of the region perfect place to start any excursion to witness firsthand the Mayan Heritage.
The Yucatan is in one word, breathtaking. Its rich culture, its fantastic food, its kind and gentle people, everything about the Yucatan is great. The Yucatan is considered the whole Yucatan Peninsula, which is divided in three states: Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Yucatán. The three of them share a common history and were separated during the 1800’s, so most traditions and customs are shared.
The common ancestors were the Mayas, and ancient civilization that built Chichen Itza, Uxmal, and several other majestic sites. They were wonderful mathematicians and architects. There are some towns scattered all around the Yucatan were there are still some true Mayas.
Yucatan cuisine is the result of a mixture of influences. The essence of the ancient Mayas is combined with the European to create delicacies. The geographical location of the state, its isolation for many years from the rest of the country, the commercial exchange, and the immigration of people from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and the Middle East, make their gastronomy really stand out from the rest of Mexican food.
The state of Yucatan has great cultural and natural heritage. You might be interested in any of the following:
