Guardiagrele is a town and commune in the province of Chieti, part of the Abruzzo region of central Italy. It is located in the foothills of the Maiella mountain, at an elevation of around 576 meters. Its population numbers about 10,000.

Roccascalegna is a commune and town in the province of Chieti, part of the Abruzzo region of southern Italy. The small, medieval town is perfectly preserved, lying on the spur of the mountain. The medieval castle was built by the Lombards, with a Norman tower.

    "My wife wanted to find out about her grandfather's involvement in the WW2 campaign around Ortona and Orsogna. She did a fair amount of research and found Mike online. He did some further research and we joined him in Italy for 2 really informative days following the path of her grandfather and his regiment. We saw a lot and visited some great local attractions around the area. Thanks Mike."

    "If you want something different as part of your tour in Italy, you should contact Mike Howard of Absolutely Abruzzo Tours. He and his staff are fluent in the language, know all the history, and they will take you to many beautiful areas of this province, including the Adriatic coastline. If you are in need of research for descendants or relatives, they know where to look when info is sent to them prior to the trip. They also know the best restaurants in the area."

    "Following on from our very successful tour in the Abruzzo region in 2013, we decided to engage Michael again for our 2015 tour. Where 2013 was within his comfort zone, exploring the Sangro, Orsogna and other places where New Zealanders fought in World War ll, but 2015 was a different, it involved 10 days, from Arezzo, Florence, the Val de Pisa, and Chianti country, to Ravenna, Montagnana, Padua, and Trieste. Michael rose to the occasion brilliantly; his research and planning were impeccable and all on the tour said it was the best yet."

    "What a different tour! Do not expect the usual hype, rather, just an efficient, friendly, no hassle, even paced tour; somewhat like visiting friends who take you to special places that they know and where there are no or few tourists. Michael was able to do a special tour for us, as our Europe travels were finishing in Italy, a couple of weeks before the Naturally Abruzzo scheduled tours started. Our shepherds tracks tour left nothing to be desired: stunning snowcapped mountains, poppies blooming in the early spring, wildflowers, fresh air, ancient hill top villages with their narrow winding lanes, and so much fresh lunchtime food that dinner was hardly required, so a light supper sufficed.Restaurant owners, whom Michael has used for years, often brought out extra courses for us to try. Everything was washed down with local wine, grappa, limoncello, and whatever else was there. Lovely, peaceful and friendly accommodation at Le Magnolie olive farm, where we prepared one of our own meals and Michael sang. Penna pie dimonte accommodation on the Maiella mountainside was spectacular; we had time to ourselves at both places after the fantastic waist expanding lunches, to explore a little on foot or just put our feet up and catch up on emails to family and friends, have a snooze, or read. There is of course much more, you should experience it for yourself. We are happy we choose this tour and recommend it."

    "The 7 day Abruzzo trip was recommended to us by our travel agent in New Zealand, who was also going to be on the tour. From the moment we stepped off the overnight ferry in Ancona and were met by Michael, the week that followed was almost surreal. We enjoyed the divine, absolutely fresh tasting, best Italian food we have tasted; the wonderful wines matched by Micheal; the truffle hunting; the olive oil tasting; the cooking lesson with Michael's wonderful voice serenading us while we kneaded our pasta; the wonderful accommodations and the lovely little towns. While we did not meet Luciana, we had our own travel agent, Rachel, who stepped in and assisted Michael and was also a source of knowledge having spent a lot of time travelling and in Italy. A tour not to be missed. Everything we were fortunate to experience cannot be accessed by the common tourist. I cannot recommend it enough."
